Looks like the conroe is out of the box and out of vaporware.
ANd it is kicking AMD's butt. Even the lowly chip beats out the best Amd prosessr. Amd has some answering to do... can they answer?

@theone,
Thanks for the link,have you got another link to the money? LOL! If I can scrape some extra cash together I will be getting one myself...before they are gone!

@baltekmi,
I'm sure AMD will have an answer,the question is will it come too late.Intel is certainly causing quite a stir and I'm sure people will be swarming on this new offering.

That's what happened to me. I had an X850 Pro on order for $154, total! My bank didn't clear it in time. I missed out on it by about 4 hours! Glad it happened now! I wound up with a cheap AGP that's got 16 active pipes, the fast Samsung memory and the R430 chip! This is essentially an X800 XT. Hooked up digitally it's more than I hoped for when I bought it. DVD's are no longer "movies", they're an exciting experience! There's no comparisun between the analog and the digital. The analog is TV and the digital is amazing. You see things you've never seen before because of the amazing detail digital affords. I can't wait to see "Batman the Begining" and maybe "King Kong" The dimensionality the digital gives it is almost like 3D. Throw in "Jurasic Park" and wow.........! It's as close to real life as you can get, second only to the real thing!

aabbccdd,

I'm glad to hear that you've got the temps under control. How quiet are those Sythe Fans!LOL Bet the whole computer is a lot quieter as well. Glad it worked well for you. Eventually I'll get a couple of the Sythe fans for myself and enjoy a little quiet as well.

Got my new X800 GTO AGP 8x video card installed. The way it all worked out turned out to be quite a bargain. First thing is it came with the good GPU chip, the R430. It also came with all 16 pipes enabled and the fast Samsung memory. Saphire may call it a GTO, but the specs call it an X800 XT. It will waste any nVidia card except the 7800GS, and there, it's pretty even as most of the differences are subjective with no real performance gain for one or the other. Out of the box, stock mine does 11487 3DMarks (3D Mark 3.0)! I play Halo at max everything and it's smooth as glass.

The digital output to my Sceptre is connected and I can't find words to express how it lookes when playing a DVD. Easiest way to describe it is Analog, it's TV! Great TV, but TV none the less. Digital it's an amazing experience. Where you would see a dark area on the screen with the analog, there's detail with the digital in that same dark area. You see so much more than ever before. The depth is another amazing thing too! It's just so real and lifelike with a dimensionality that's just incredible. Almost 3D! In movies like Batman Begins or King Kong the 3D effect will have you ducking. The Shawshank Redemption (my finest recent RB/CCE work), in your minds eye, puts you in the picture. You feel like you are right in the cell!

I have a Sony Scientific Medical 17" RGB monitor that cost a whopping $1800 4 years ago that doesn't look as good! I don't know that the video card itself improves DVD picture quality very much. I wouldn't think so, but the digital.......! WOW!!!!!!! Can't ever go back to analog now!

Yea! Except none of the games work again. Voltages are good so I know that's not the issue. The vid card only shares with the hard drive so I don't know what it is. I'm about ready to give up on XP and go back to 2000 Pro. At least everything runs on that. Every damn time Windows XP updates I have a platter full of bugs! A year without a Profile and now I have to click it on every damn time I boot up! I don't want the damn thing and now M$ says I have to have it and it can't be removed, at least not easily! My question to Mr. Gates is how come I could play Quake yesterday, but I can't play it today? There's been no hardware or software added and it ran Prime95 all night without a glitch or error!

aabbccdd,

You are more than welcome! Glad everything worked out, in a nice quiet (pun intended) way! Nothing beats good airflow, especially good quiet airflow!

theonejrs,

A year without a Profile and now I have to click it on every damn time I boot up!

Get TweakUI from MS, and you will never have to select a Profile again, it works.

My last post here, hopefully.

FIHSNERD..My primary concern is enough power lines to run the HDD's.I've even considered a SATA2IDE converter cbl,but read somewhere these don't always work
this particular is only 12+x2 at 19amps
Somewhere else I had read that the amps are very important,I think maybe should be around 25to30amps.Don't really know though as I've never built a system B4.So if Ima gonna doit I A WANNA DO IT RIGHT
I'm waiting on the Dual Core AMD's to come down a little[hopefully by the end of the mon]

ANYBODY feel free to jump-in & respond

@rick5446,
Go here and do the calculations for your new build.
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp

Remember,most psu manufacturers over rate their power supplies and give you a peak wattage rating.That means a 600 watt power supply may deliver 600 watts but only for a very short time before it shuts down.Deduct 30% off of the manufacturers rating IE: If psu has a 600 watt rating expect 420 watts @ 100% duty cycle 24/7.
Also have a look here to get an idea of the not recommended brands.

crowy..That little calculation page shows 511 Watt PSU.How important are the AMPS?They do vary on a lot of PSU
Also if their are not enough power connectors for HDD's is it safe to use a splitter

rick5446,
The amps are required to get things powered up eg:hard drive motors spinning up,dvd rom drive motors spinning up.A hard drive can draw up to around 2.8 amps @ 12v and .75 amps @+5v when its spinning up at boot and then drop down to .7 amps once its reached max rpm.So in your case with 6 drives you are looking at 16.8 amps 12v. 4.5amps +5v which is about 220 watts which must be supplied for around 10 seconds just for your hard drives.After 10 seconds the 12v current consumption drops to the steady state of about 0.7A on each of the 5v and 12v rails, about 12W total for each drive or 72 watts for 6 drives.You then have to take into consideration everything else thats powering up at the same time(mainboard,videocard,floppy drive,usb peripherals if they draw power from the system etc.) So the amps are what you need to get eveything up to a stable state.

crowy..Then it would probably be safe to have a PSU/W about 13amps instead of the 30amps
Also what about my question about enough power connectors for HDD's is it safe to use a splitter [1x2]

@rick5446,
A splitter will be ok just as long as the current draw on the 12v. / +5v. rails doesnt exceed the rated output of the psu at start up.Remember most psu manufacturers exceed there claimed output by as much as 30%.Dont fall for the 1000Watt 65amp psu for $20 mentality,It's not going to happen.You get what you pay for is true to a certain extent with psu's although there are exceptions.Have a look for some psu comparisons on the web and try to get an idea of what and what not to go for.If possible get a psu locally so if there is a problem,a return for exchange does'nt take days or weeks.One more thing, if you want peace of mind a second psu to power all of those drives may be an option.

@FIHSNERD,
Are you drowning?
