It's excessive storage for most, but I like it. Unfortunately the one I got is faulty, but then it happens...

well, they're pretty easy to put into rank order, but http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html is a good place to start.

For a straight up ranking sheet I'll give it.

Well the AMD Athlon XP was good but it's been long dead and gone. Same with the AMD Duron which competed with the sucky original Intel Celeron.

The Sempron and Sempron 64 are both fairly good budget processors with a very good performance/price ratio. They compete with the painfully weak Celeron D.

The Single Core AMD Athlon 64 is aging but still strong. It competes with the also aging Intel Pentium 4 5xx and 6xx series.

The Dual Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 is aging but still good. It competes with the fairly good (but aging as well) Intel Pentium D.

The Core 2 Duo is brand spanking new and a successor to the Pentium 4 and Pentium D. It will compete with the AM3 when it comes out.

The Opteron and Xeon are AMD's and Intel's respective server processors. They come in both Dual Core and Single Core They are very similar to their mainstream counterparts except they are made for 24/7 use.

AMD <-> Intel

For Single Core:

Athlon 64 <-> Pentium 4 5xx/6xx series

Sempron/Sempron 64 <-> Celeron D(Original Celeron sucked badly)

Opteron <-> Xeon

Dual Core

Athlon 64 X2 <-> Pentium D

Opteron Dual Core <-> Xeon Dual Core

AM3 <-> Conroe(Core 2 Duo)

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 4GHz(20 x 200) 1.5v 3000NB 2000HT, Corsair Hydro H110 w/ 4 x 140mm 1500RPM fans Push/Pull, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5, 8GB(2 x 4GB) G.Skill RipJaws DDR3-1600 @ 1600MHz CL9 1.55v, Gigabyte GTX760 OC 4GB(1170/1700), Corsair 750HX

sorry for the off topic post but this seems to be where the most people are that know alot about computers.so with that being said i was wondering if are all sata harddrives loud?

I have a Seagate 160GB S-ata 3.0 and it's the quietest drive I have ever seen and not heard. It's absolutely silent. You have to put your ear up against the case when the drive light is on to hear anything. The quietest drive I ever had before that was the first Samsung IDE drive, back in the 90's! I think the 10,000 RPM of the Raptors is the reason for a lot of the noise, although I had a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive on my Dell workstation and it wasn't too noisey. Still isn't, for that matter! WD has had a few very noisey drives over the years. When they were the first to come out with a 340MB IDE, it had a sound like a cat scratching in a litter box!

You want a Quiet S-ata drive, buy a Seagate Barracuda!

wel, it all depends how fast you want the PC to be. An X1600 Pro is often a good deal in that price bracket.

@tranquash

get a 1650 not the 1600. the 1650pro is a rebadged 1600xt.

a 7600gs is a better card than a 1600pro.

if your not gaming at all i would stay with your 7300 till some cheaper dx10 cards come out as you wont get any benefit from the extra power in either a 1600/1650 or a 7600.

just a thought.

Unless you need a card urgently, then getting one about a month before a whole new release (aka x2900 series) is a bad idea.

Whatever you can get now, will be a lot better for the same money once the x2900's are out, that should go for both Nvidia and ATI.

P.S. Basically along the lines of what was already said just before.

thank you marsey99 and all. i'll do that. i'll use the one i got and wait a little. you made me think..., with all the people upgradind or wanting to upgrade for vita the prices may tend to maintain or go up a little; probably not a good time to buy one. ;p

Cheers!!!

I'll have a very nice 7900GTX with or without EK W-Block or a 6800 GT Extreme with or without W-Block as well for sale very soon, just after I upgrade to an X2900 or 8900 which ever wins out when released.
I'm holding back, but I'm getting very impatient:)

next 12 weeks and they will all be on the shop shelves. top to bottom whole new range.

i cant wait to see how much the price drops on the 8800gtx when ati brings theirs out. but realisticly i will most likly end up with more of a midrange card (86/26 depending who wins that one) seeing as how i dont have a monster screen that needs all that gpu power to give the best picture.

not jealous....honest :)

Why don't you put the PC in a closet with sound proofing and have only the monitor, input devices and peripherals on your side of the door. Now that would be quiet. You could put a "doggy door" in so you can reach through to change media (or just open and close the old fashioned way). ;)

LOL Simple enough, put a camera in the closet with it. ;)

My comment was half serious. A friend of mine has a server in his office complex that was a bit unsightly and noisy, so he put it in a closet in his office.

Flashed my bios from 1305 to 1901. The updated bios alone seems to have lowered my mobo temp another 1 degree C from 35 to 34.

I can't decide whether to run everything the way it is currently: multiplier @ 9, fsb @ 355.3mhz, (3.1976ghz), memory @ 444.1mhz and fsb:dram ratio @ 4:5 or change the multiplier to 8 and set the fsb to 400mhz (3.2ghz) and set the memory to 400mhz thus changing the fsb:dram ratio to 1:1.

Any opinions or suggestions?

mort, bigdk is probably the best to explain this as im sure hes had a play withose settings too. :P

i know for fact that my last system worked better in all benchmarks while not running any dividers, but games didnt realy mind and they gave better results from tighter ram timings and a higher cpu frequency. that was with a k8 amd.

i have not had as much time to play with this core 2 duo yet so i dont realy know what it does/doesnt like or what will give the best score in different things.

edit

after thinking that the freezer 7 pro didnt fit right i did some searching and found a post in the anandtech forums via a link on the asus forum by a tech guy from asus. now he states there that for good fitting you need to cut the bottom left corner of the plastic fan mount off to stop it from catching the hsf on the northbridge as is you dont you cant get 100% contact between the cpu and hsf and the force on the nb hsf can also reduce its contact and lowwer its cooling ability too.

so i have and it seems to have done the job. the base of the 7 pro looks to sit correctly and it is not in contact with the nb hsf.

i also used this as a good excuse to refitt the nb hsf too, man it was a mess under it but i cleaned it up and refitted it too, now my temps.

now i stopped using everest for my temps as im not sure my chipset is supprted by it and some of the readings it gave could not of been right. so acording to pc prode im now getting,

31c cpu
34c mobo
25c inturnal case

still running 3.0ghz @1.4v these are 10 mins after playing bf2142 for half an hour, as i type this the cpu has dropped again now to 30c.

@sam
could this be why you havent got above 2.7?
