hi guys! This seems waay too complicated, so please bare with me!
I've just recently gotten into online gaming and I laaaag soo much when I'm playing CS, CSS, half life 2 etc etc... I dont know if I should work on upgrading my current computer, or just trying (for the first time ever!) to build one from scratch. I'll tell you about my current computer, and then I hope u can recommend to me a course of action!

My current computer
Sony Vaio desktop model RS420
Windows XP SP2
512MB DDR333 PC-2700
120GB 7200 ATA-100 HD
Intel P4 2.8C with HT/800 FSB
ATI Radeon 128MB 9600XT vid card

Thats about all I know, I'm not sure about the mobo and power supply and other stuff. Oh and I have 6MB comcast cable internet :D

Ok so do you think I should try to build another comp, or change a few things on this one so I stop lagging while playing online!??
I'm sure adding some more RAM would help (comp is upgradable to 2GB), but any other suggestions?

If you're recommending a new comp/build, please let me know details cuz this will be my first! I'm leaning towards Intel cuz thats all I've ever had. something affordable but still good for online gaming :D

Well I don't think you would need 2GB of RAM, try adding another 512 stick. Also your vid card is just ok for source.

Now lag can also be due to the servers your playing on. I used to run with a clan that was central based and for awhile using crappy servers. A friend and I started our own clan and are renting servers from NuclearFallout.net and servers being L.A. based I get no lag at all.

So I would try more local servers. You can also adjust your rates in console. Default rates are rate 20000, cl_cmdrate 30, and cl_updaterate 20. I have mine set to rate 30000, cl_cmdrate to 65 and cl_updaterate 65. Playing with those numbers can help with your game play.

BTW, what is your ping usually in the servers you play on? Mine is around 38 for our L.A. based servers.

Thanks for the responses,

DDP: I'm not sure what you mean by what is my free ram out of the 512MB... I dunno how to check, I'm sorry! If u mean how many available slots I have... my comp came with 2x 256MB RAM so I have 2x 512MB slots left available.

flip218: I dont think the lag is from the servers, because it happens on like every server I go to :)... My ping usually starts out at somewhere around 40-50, but once I start playing it starts going crazy... ranging from 40 - 600 LOL... it just goes up n down every round. I will definitely try ur rate change suggestion and see how that goes!

thanks alot guys! (oh and I ordered Kingston hyperX 2x 512MB DDR 333 ram... is this good stuff or should i go with something else?)

do a ctrl-alt-delete, look at performance tab at top & total ram & free ram on right side

get more memory as what flip suggested as you have 155meg free before playing game. see when playing game what the free ram is
