How do I format my external hard drive without losing data? I have some very important stuff on the hard drive and it would be a very big help if someone could tell me.

Hi, If your up to it, you could delete all unwanted data on drive and download Partition Magic......http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html

This will enable you to (squeeze)move all data to one small partition on your drive...depending how much data you have, you can make a small partition(5GB) and move all data to it. You can then format the rest of the drive. After your done, you increase the size of the (5GB)partition to the original size....hope this helps

Hi, if you go to the link and download the trial, you can read the tutorial that comes with the program. You should have a better idea about the process and then I, or someone else will be glad to help you after you've gained some knowledge. Feel free to private message me but it's better to have open posts......later

I don't think format is what you're wanting. All a quick format DOES is erase everything. A full format erases everything then writes blank data.

Perhaps defragging is what you need to do, in which case, get a copy of "Executive Diskeeper Pro." It's head and shoulders above any other defragging software.
