when i backup the entire first disc on clone dvd it looks like crap.

As the disc is probably dual layered (8.4 gig) you probably need to use dual layered media so you can get an uncompressed disc.

It probably looks crap due to the compression it has to do to get the whole thing to 4.38 gig.Try just taking the movie segment with shrink to see if the quality improves

if you want to get better quality with episode DVDs then I would rip to hard drive.... use DVDRemake and take out all the unwanted stuff like previews, warning screens,etc....... then use DVDRebuilder Pro and that will give you the best quality you can get on a DVD-5!

By looks like crap do you mean you have pixellation/freezing/pausing or that it just looks bad? Most seasonal disks are highly compressed using a dual layer is an answer, also splitting to two disks can be done. I usually split my series disks to two so there is no compression and then use preserve the menus in Clone. Or as IHoe suggested you can use DVDRebuilder which is the best program for highly compressed disks, you can use the free version of the program. You can also use the free DVDShrink, with deep analysis which will do a two pass and AEC quality enhancements set to Max Smooth, this will give you the best output you can get with a transcoding program. Nero Recode is also excellent using advanced analysis and slow encoding.
