So I recently bought the DRU500ax and it came with the 2.0c firmware. I also bought Maxell 2x DVD-R media and burned a couple DVD-Video DVDs at 2x, no problem. I then upgraded to 2.0e and started having problems with random write errors half way through when burning at 2x. So I started burning at 1x and it worked although 75% of the time when it was ALL done burning Nero would have a write error on the lead out or something and fail to close the DVD. It still plays fine in my PS2 and on my computer so I didn't worry about it. 2.0f firmware came out and had the same problem writing at 2x if I recall. So then somewhere I read a post about how someone else had determined that the 1.0 firmwares were better for writing DVD-R and the 2.0s were better for DVD+R. So I put 1.0g on my DVD-R and it started burning at 2x again just fine (still with problems closing the DVD with Nero). But lately the DVDs I've been burning have been having problems playing on my PS2. So I figure the PS2 is probably picky about reading burned DVDs and keep going because I can play them on my computer. But the latest DVD I tried to burn freezed on the 3rd or 4th chapter on my PS2 AND on my computer. The very drive that burned it won't read it! So I tried upgrading to 2.0f again to see if it would work and I tried a simulation at 2x and it worked so I burned the DVD at 2x. It complete just fine (well.. didn't close the disc but this doesn't seem to affect much). Again when I try playing it on my computer by putting the DVD in my DRU500a it freezes up part way through (like the 10th chapter). So then I tried burning at 1x with the 2.0f firmware and it gave me a random write error 25% of the way through.

I'm not using my computer at ALL when I'm writing these DVDs. These write errors aren't buffer underruns or anything. I read Maxell media was pretty decent. Why am I having so many problems just burning a damn DVD? To rip the DVD I use dvd decrypter (latest version), run it through dvd2one (latest version), burn it with Nero (latest version). I have an A7V133 motherboard with the latest bios (1009). I wish I had just stuck with the 2.0c firmware since it didn't give me ANY problems (although I guess I hadn't used it much). Anybody got any advice?

Thanks.

I too am having problems burning with 2.0f. Dvd-r is where the problem is for me. I can write one good dvd-r out of 3 or 4. The others become costly coasters. So far the only dvd-r I have tried are verbatims.

I get write errors at approximately 25% completion with Nero 5.5.10.

I don't have much probs with +RWs although I do get an occasional write error at the same 25% completion, but only (it seems) after I tried burning a dvd-r which failed.

sony dru-500ax, firmware 2.0f and nero 5.5.10

Boy,
I wish I could help you guys on this. I too have a Sony DRU-500AX and I know it's suppose to burn at 4x but doesn't. After reading the problems people are having changing firmware, I decided not to try and fix what's not broke. I have been very fortunate in not having burned any coasters. I hope things work out for you.

I just purchased mine recently, still standard.
I used dvd x copy xpress from 321 studio and loved the result. It produced a backup copy of my lord of the rings in just over an hour (movie only). Quality wise, it is looks identical to the original. The screen size is slightly smaller, but if you are not used to seeing dvd's; I don't think you would spot it.
So far I've not had any problems.

Ejm,
I don't use DVDXCOPY. I don't like that stupid black screen with the red letters stating it's a backup by DVDXCOPY and then garbage and at the end of the page stating 321 studios.

I did read here on afterdawn.com where someone had stated that it's possible to remove the black screen by editing the IFO file, it was also stated that in-between frames the DVD being burned is encoded with the persons name and computer number. The person stated that he/she wasn't able to figure out how it was being done(I guess meaning where the programming commands were to instruct the burner to burn it in).

Now, how true this is I don't know but, it sounds like it could be.

hi CloneDron
Sorry you feel that way. It is a little problem that I easily can live with. Nothing stops you from making more than one "backup copy".
And yes, it does put in at least a serial number into the movie, this is to prevent others from copying your backup.
Small price to pay.

Hi again CloneDron
I just used the prog again, geuss what it is very easy to get rid of this you don't like.
"I don't like that stupid black screen with the red letters stating it's a backup by DVDXCOPY".
All you have to do is:
when it has finish copying the program, go to it's temp directory and delete these files:
video_ts.vop & the text file it puts in the root folder.

stick a dvd rw in drive and accept step 2 this causes the program to quit and it will not erase directory, than all you have to do is burn that directory to dvd.

Another way to do it is to go through the full prosses using a dvd rw, restore files from your recycle bin and delete the above files. Then all you have to do is burn the cd.

looks real easy to me.

Hey Ejm,
Thanks for the info, maybe I'll give it a try. Right now though, I use DVD Decrypter,DVD2ONE, and Nero Express programs and get a picture quality DVD.

It hasn't failed me yet. Thanks again for the info.

I tried burning a dvd the way I described it and found out that the vob files are written in such a way that you can not burn them to a dvd.
I was burning The lord of the rings. I tried saving the image to hd, but winxp does like files over 4gb, and removes them on completion.
Now I have to try and recover approx. 4.36gh which my drive is now missing.
The idea for doing this is if you have the image on your hard drive and use an image editor to remove the offending files it would be just a matter of burning a dvd from an iso.
The vob files can be viewed on your computer but not burned.
