Sony SLV-D350P DVD/VCR won't read DVD+R DL... time for new DVD player?

I just got some RiData DVD+R DL 2.4x discs and made a few DVD's using some random video. The discs seem to work fine on the 2 PC's I've tried but I didn't have as much luck with the DVD players and I'm assuming it's just a compatibility issue.

The only player in the house with really bad problems is mine. It's a Sony SLV-D350P DVD/VCR combo and it plays the previews fine but freezes when the menu shows up. When it actually gets to the movie it jumps around (311:16, 6:17:54, 1:20:15, etc). I'm guessing it's just a compatibility issue, right? I'd probably buy a new DVD player if this is the case.

I just find it odd beacuse it has played every DVD (from Blockbuster, etc) or CD(pro, -R, +R, +RW) I've tried. Is it fairly normal for certain media to just plain not work?
