yea thanks for all the help even though it looks like im just gonna have to get a new hdd ro buy a whole new computer which if i do this time will be a desktop not a laptop (their just not upgradable enough and more difficult to open up and fix internal problems)but neways.....so you would probably just buy a 2.5 hdd enclosure and put the old drive in there then try to copy as much data over to the new one as i can and if so do i have to do anything else to be able to copy data from my old drive becides just putting it in the enclosure and connecting of course?

I haven't tried to rescue data in a while. But you should be able to just set the jumper on the old hard drive to slave, and make sure your new hard drive or computer is set to master. Then if you have a dual hard drive ribbon, plug it into the middle, "slave," connector. Maybe the data won't be too corrupted. But, nothing is for certain. If you get a new computer and it has the newer serial ata drive. It will be a little different, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. CD.

I just did this for a friend. Fixed the heat issue last year, and this year her HDD took a dump. Put a new one in (Larger than the old one), and bought a 2.5" USB enclosure. This drive was TOAST.....no Windows machine would recognize it. I threw together a Fedora Core 5 box real quick, rebuilt the kernel to support NTFS, and away I went. The drive would click and bang like mad, but after a few attempts I was able to retrieve about 90% of her data. It doesnt seem like your drive is too bad, so you may be able to use a windows machine to pull data. Be patient though. If you hit a bad spot on the drive where some of your data is stored, that data is pretty much lost. Just skip over the file that would not transfer and try again. You should try to do it folder by folder. Dont try to copy EVERYTHING at once. You will understand why if you try to do it.

Too bad it wasnt heat. Thats a free easy fix. Anyway, hope you learned something along the way while taking your laptop apart.

Keep us posted.

You have a floppy drive for the laptop?

Go to bootdisk.com, and download the Windows 98 bootdisk.
Boot with it. Choose "Start without CD-ROM support".
From the A:\> run "fdisk" (no quotes).

See if the new drive has a partition (option 4 I beleive.) If so, then exit fdisk and type "format C: /U" (again, no qoutes). This will put a standard FAT32 format on the drive and should take card of the invalid drive error.

If tere is no partition, create a new one. You can either split the disk into 2 partitions (one for the OS, the other for data), or just make one large partition. Really up to you. After the partitions are created, reboot the machine (keep the floppy in) and choose "without CD-ROM support" again. Now format the disk as shown above. Once the drive is formatted, pull the floppy, and boot with the XP CD.

Oh yeah....explain, if you can, how the new drive is "different" than your old one. It should be a perfect fit, as they are all standard connections.

I'll be on here for a while, so I should be able to get back to you quickly.

im sorry i havent been on here for a while ive been really busy, but i dont even have my laptop anymore its at bestbuy right now my mom took it there to get it fixed so i wouldnt have to worry about it but i really appriciate all the help, the people at bestbuy seem to think becuse of the extreme heat problme with my pc that it fried my laptop but i watched them do a little bit of work on it and from what i could tell they didnt get any further than me they kept getting the same error message so they told me that i probably fried the motherbord which obviously isnt worth fixing if thats the problem but then they said they would keep it over night and run some more test on it to make sure so they called today and said that it could be the memory and that they looked at it and the memory had some damaged cells so im not really sure now thanks for all your help anyway and i may still need some i dont really know if i should give up hope for it coming back to life or not and once again sorry for not updating

well its done i wish it would have lasted longer than 2 years but o well the motherbord is fried and i dont guess theres anything else to do becuase from what i can tell in laptops everything it built onto the motherbord which would more than likely be more expencive to fix than it would be to buy a new but anyway i took the new hdd out and returned it to bestbuy and i had bought some new ram just a little while back and surprisingly it was still refundable so i got my money back on that but is there any other parts or any other uses for whats left of my laptop and another question if you dont mind i was planning on getting a new really nice computer around christmas but now i dont know what to do right now i have around $700 or $800 i could spend to buy a new computer preferably another laptop since i dont have one, then i would still buy a new desktop for christmas, i have an older desktop right now that works alright not alot of power but still runs ok, or should i wait and put the money towards a new desktop at the end of the year or do you think $700-$800 would be enough to buy a pretty powerful store bought computer (i dont feel comfortable building one) but i can upgrade almost anything. so my final question if you understood all that is, should i wait until the end of the year and buy a computer for instance is something big coming out that i should wait for and save for that is going to be expencive like i know vista is coming out but i would prefer to stay away from it or would the amount of money i have now be enough to buy a pretty decent computer i would rather have a new laptop for now but if that amount isnt enough for a pretty decent laptop then would it be enough for a pretty nice desktop........i can give you more info about what i will use it for if you need me to.......thanks
