I've run sli before with no problems playing dvd's.
I know others also using sli now, and they too have had no issues.
If you do run into a problem when running sli, then you just need to disable the sli function whilst running the dvd player.
There is no chip to remove, the board can still have both cards inserted, it is just a matter is using the onboard jumper or bios setting to disable the sli, this depends on what board you are using.
If you are only using 1 card in the board then the sli won't even come into play, even though the chipset supports it.
