I own a HP DVD Writer dvd200i
I bought some 16x DVDs (unknowingly), but the latest DVD drive firmware allows only up to 8x

Is there a way to force the DVD drive, or DVD burner software, to recognize 16x DVD+Rs?

(and yes I know it won't actually burn that fast)

you need to do a firmware update but the HP200i is an older burner and I don't know if the fireware update will allow you to burn the 16x DVDs. I had the same model burner as you and when the DVDs went from 4x to 8x my fireware update just didn't take hold and I wound up buying a new burner. Also coinsided with buying my new computer last year. here is the latest firmware update for your burner:

use at your own risk.

Let me know if you find a way to force an older burner to write on the newer 16X media, I have an older Sony, DRU-510A worls with 8X and all 4X, but not on some 16X. Only burns at 4X though. Try Verbatim 16X as these do work on the older Sony.

I used Memorex 16x and Fujifilm 16x, neither worked.

So is there any way to fool the software/hardware or even the firmware?

If the firmware were to bring 4x-8x before, would it be no different further bringing it to 16x? It seems HP is completely ignoring their older DVD drives.

This is so you will buy their new drives, they won't update it counting on you buying a new drive to keep up with the technology of new media. Try and find some older 4X or 8X media online that works and then stock up on them if you don't want to buy a new drive.

my advise to you is to buy a new drive.... some new drives are cheaper than buyig a spindle of DVDs!!!!! either that or stock up on the old 4x or 8x disk...... your drive is slow, too. It's like night and day compared to the new drives out there! As I said I had your drive and it always took anywere from 30mins - 40mins to burn a DVD! How ridiculous now, when it only takes 13-15mins with 8x media on my new drive to burn! here is a great new benque lightscribe drive:

for 89.99 and that would bring you into the 21st century! YOu can get the external or the internal drive.... internal is even cheaper than that! and I'm sure that you can look at the new Plextors, Necs, Sonys, and others that will write circles around your old drive.... hell..... pay for postage and I'll send you my old hp200i for you for freeeeeeee I never used it since I bought this new computer! it works but it's soooooooooo old it's a dinosaur!

Hi there,

I had an LG-4040B (v3.04) and I tested TYG03 (16x) media on them, it didn't know what to do with them, but it defaulted to x2.0 burn and the burns were 100%.

So if you can burn those 16x burned at x4.0 on your HP burner, you're not stuck :)

cougar_ii, I'd like to trick my DVD drive somehow like you did
and yes, I do have the latest firmware

If there's no solution, I'll have to buy one of those $40 DVD drives offered in this thread
