what are the benefits of utilising IMAP over pop3, in connection to email

it's a server preference, I think it's more for local networks (intranet) than internet communication, or something, but if your server isn't an IMAP server, then you can't use it. :)

having issues with the pop3 allowing to much spam through, and the server asked us to change to imap.Is imap web based or something

With standard pop3 accounts you can only manipulate the email you have on the server after you download it to your computer (unless they offer webmail).

Imap accounts allow you to actually manage the mail that is on the server itself. That way you can sort mail on the server into different folders and if you log into the mail from another computer the mail will still be arranged as you set it from the other computer.

Most ISPs do not offer IMAP due to the server overhead.

thanks i was having issues with the dual folders after changing to the imap options.It asked me to download files and folders as part of the upgrade and i had all these folders every where.Have now sorted it.The 1st time the spam still came through so i re did it and now it seems fine
