A can of compressed air and a lens cleaning disc are all the things required. Use the air to blow out the inside of the drive then the lens cleaner (follow directions for the disc you chose). I would clean them quartly. More often if you smoke or have pets. I'm guilty of both so I clean mine monthly. :)

As the brushes start to wear on the cleaner disc, a drop of alcohol will add to the life. I don't use it as a general rule. I wouldn't recommend any other type of cleaning solvent as it might leave a "film" on the lens. That would make the problems worse!

I do not use those hard lens cleaning discs. After ruining my first RCA stand alone player,I consider that lens cleaning disc as a last resort-before drive replacement. That brush can knock the lens out of alignment.

Keep all your discs clean, and lint free.

I'll use compressed air once in a blue moon. Major issues, and the troubleshooting narrows it down to drive issue-then a lens cleaning is in order.

I have well over 3500+ backups on my original benq 1620 and she's holding as strong as the day I bought it.Only used 1 shot of compressed air!

brysonj: What are your exact issues?

Make sure your burners play their own backups, and they should look perfect.
