I can play an original disc in both my old (5 years) Panasonic standalone and in my PC DVD-DL drive. Not a problem, dropped frame or pixellation to be seen. When I try to back up the disc, I get the dreaded cyclic redundancy error. I know which VOB is crapping out, so II ran just it and no problems to be seen. Can anyone explain this discrepancy? (I'm sure Scuba Pete and Oriphus are laughing their drives off by now.)

What is the name of the movie? Try ripping to HDD with DVDFab Decrypter first and then transcode with DVD Shrink. Here is a guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

With most movies you can skip the VobBlanker step and proceed on with DVD Shrink or Recode, whichever you prefer. You don't mention which programs you are working with.

DVDFab Express did the trick, although it ran for 20 hours to do it.

It shouldn't take but about 15-20 minutes with a P4 to rip, 20-30 minutes to encode and 15 minutes to burn at 4X. What are your PC specs? Is DMA enabled on all your drives?
