I have a fairly simple question which you may or may not be able to help me with

I have purchased high quality media (taiyo yuden from japan) as instructed...

It is rated at 16 Speed. My dvd writer is rated at 8 speed. From the guides, i understand it is best to write at half the maximum speed.

Therefore, should i burn at 8 speed (as this is half of the dvd discs highest spped) or at 4 speed (as this is half of my BURNERs speed)

Also I've heard that PS2 don't like the 16x disc as much as the 8x discs...

try 4X first. If you have no luck then try 8X
You should stick with 8X speed media, a lot of people have had problems with 16X speed media

if you want to use 16x media and make a good burn you must have a 16x compliant DVD burner +recent firmware + good quality burner.

Curses.

My Burner is pants. I do have to say though that before i saw everyone's replies here i DID burn at 8 speed and the game so far works fine! However, i'll do it at 4 in the future if it has a better success rate.

Time to find some 8 speed media then in that case (which is harder than i thought in england - well, finding stuff that wasn't made in taiwan or asia anyway)

Just so you know, Japan is in Asia and the Taiyo Yuden (which you have said yourself is a high quality media) is made in Japan...
