hi guys,
I've been backing up DVDs for a long ass time now and recently switched computers... For some reason when I use decrypter to decrypt and then burn on my verbatim 16X DVD-Rs my speeds are jacked up .... I decrypt at in between .9 to 1.9X.... and burn at a maximum of 4X... why??? I have a 16X DL DVDRW drive... I updated the firmware, and still no result... I think I read in a previous post that I could change my registry settings to fix this but I cant find that post anymore...

Any ideas? I hate this slooooooow speed, its killin me!! I mean 45+ minutes just to decrypT!!! wtf is that!

thanks for the help! oh btw, I havent installed any new programs or anything all i have is DVD Decrypter, FabDecrypter, and DVD Shrink... plus whatever crap that came with the computer as factory.

thanks again!

Hello redZoneOS.

Have you checked to make sure your burner didn't drop into PIO mode from DMA mode along the way? Here's a guide by bbmayo for checking:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

What is the brand and model of your burner?

hi laddyboy,
thanks for the response... I tried the suggestions on the link u posted but no result... My burner is still slower then it should be, and I'm on DMA mode.

I have a pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D with the latest firmware update.

Thanks

OK so this is a Pioneer drive with firmware 1.08 then? What sort of ripping speeds did you used to get? I'm pretty sure Pioneer had riplocks on their drives. Did you get 5X rips?

Are you using AnyDVD in the background for decryption? DVD Decrypter can be slow if it's churning through pack headers and structural protections. What about ripping an already decrypted disk that you've burned, what kind of ripping speed are you getting then? Is the ripping slow even using DVDFab Decrypter and DVD Shrink for ripping?

It's also possible the read laser is slightly misaligned or has a dirty lens causing a lot of rereads. Are you getting multiple read attempts in the DVD Decrypter log?

Look at the Tools>Settings...Device tab in DVD Decrypter. Anything checked under the "Options" section?

I used to be able to burn an ISO at 16X but I chose to burn at 8X... now the max I can go is 4X... As far as decrypter/fabdecrypter goes, I'm not sure of speeds but I used to completely put a DVD on my HD within 15 minutes... now it takes almost an hour... with both programs...

I'm not using AnyDVD but I dont really think I need to because it was working without it perfectly before, but i will try if u recommend.

I tried putting a burned dvd on my HD and the same problem occurs rip speeds are 0.9 to 1.9X

There are no read errors or re-read attempts in decrypter log.

I had this problem a looong time ago on a different computer and this guy told me to erase or change something in my registry and that did the trick! but i dunno how to do the samething again...

I appreciate ur input tho thx alot!

Is this what you're looking for, the registry reset?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
subfolder 0001 delete MasterIdDataCheckSum SecondaryIdDataCheckSum
subfolder 0002 delete MasterIdDataCheckSum SecondaryIdDataCheckSum

You shouldn't need to get that drastic. Simply go into Device Manager and delete Primary and Secondary IDE and reboot. When the OS finds the controllers again it will rewrite the registry settings of errors encountered back to default of (0).

You might try physically removing the cables from the burner, restarting, shutdown, reattach the cables, and restart.

Is your burner on the same IDE channel as your HDD? Is the burner set to master or slave?

There is modified firmware that removes the riplock from the Pioneer drive here:

http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/

This may be the cause of your difficulties.

There used to be a trick when using the Plextor and Pioneer drives with DVD Decrypter. I don't know if it still works or not but I don't think it would hurt to try it. It's from the author of DVD Decrypter a couple of years ago.

To make it read faster, press and hold the eject button until the light flashes and the tray ejects.
The next disc you insert will read at full speed.

You will need to do this for each disc you want to read quickly because when you reboot / eject the disc, the drive goes back to 2x mode.

Removing the riplock with the modded firmware is a more permanent solution.

Yea I think thats what I was talking about but you're right I dont want to do all that unless its absolutely necessary... I'm going to uninstall/reboot and test it out to see if that works... If not I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try and physically unplug and reconnect everything...

Also I'm not sure how my hardware is connected because this is a computer straight from SONY and I have never opened it but I'll find out tomorrow :D

oh and I forgot to mention, my firmware version is NOT 1.08, it is 1.10... Since my drive is SONY OEM, they have their own version and 1.10 is what I found on there website... I hope its not wrong!

anyway I'll be back on here tomorrow to let u know if any of these other attempts work...

Thanks for all ur help and patience!

I think 1.10 is the version for the Sony version. I'm pretty sure that burner will use the regular Pioneer firmware as well. Any modified firmware will likely be the Pioneer firmware. This is the likely firmware that includes the modification that removes the 2X riplock.

http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/DVR-106D%20v1.07%20-%20RPC-1%20+%202xD...

This burner was introduced 3 years ago. It's very old as technology goes. The firmware above is based on the 1.07 Pioneer which isn't even their last version. People are no longer modding the firmware because the number of these burners in use is in decline, not because of poor quality, but because people have replaced them with newer, faster, better-featured burners. There may come a point when you'll have to consider spending the money for a new one.

I went back and read your first post. 4X is the maximum burn speed for this drive if it is in fact a model 106. It has a riplock of 2X out of the box.

What exactly does DVD Decrypter list on the top line of the righthand side window when a blank disk is inserted?

you're absolutely right, this dvd burner is rated at 4X DVD-R write speed... what got me all confused and worked up is my stupid sony specs sheet. It says on there that this burner writes at 16X DVD+-R which is obviously false. Kinda strange tho that I was using HP DVDRs and was burning at 8X consistently... ohh well, I think I'm just gonna invest in a newer burner with 16X write speeds

Thanks for all ur help tho i really appreciate it!

one last question tho, since the read speed is rated 12X for DVDs, shouldnt I be able to use decrypter to at least put the files on my HD at faster then 0.9X???

Decrypter says : PIONEER DVDRW DVR-106D 1.10 (ATA)

thanks!

12X would be the max read speed for other burned, single layer, nonpressed disks, in other words, disks other than dual layer commercial DVDs. Some manufacturers locked the read speed of their burners via the burner's firmware so that read errors would not occur when reading data from multiple layers. Pioneer was one of those that did so and locked this one to a max of 2X. That's why someone modified the firmware to remove the riplock. NEC is another manufacturer that does the same thing although they usually riplock at 5X. All of their firmware gets modified by someone to remove the lock as well.

My favorite burners for the $ are the BenQ (I think the 1650 is the newest model) and NEC 3550.
