hello, im looking for a way to connect a USB cable from my notebook PC to My Desktop PC to transfer files from HDD to HDD, but niether PC recognizes eachother when the usb cable is connected between them. does anyone know how i would go about setting this up to get it to work right.. or is it even possible to do this at all..???

hey, is there a way to do a remote desktop with a USB- PC to PC connection also..??? control the desktop from my laptop via USB link.. what type of wired PC to PC connection has the fastes data transfer rates..???

Wired PC to PC? Fiber.
For desktop control of a remote system on the same network, check out VNC at http://www.realvnc.com

when you say Fiber what type of cable would i get then, and how would i set it up- so i can transfer files directly from my desktop PC to my laptop PC..

is there a way at all to just plug a USB cable into both PC's and then thier HDD drives show up in each others My Computer window..???

I have never seen that done. Nor have I read about it. If theyt both have a NIC, just get a crossover cable. Set up a workgroup and you are good to go. Really simple process once you have done it once or twice.

when you say "Wired PC to PC? Fiber" is the fastest PC to PC data connection, are crossover cables made of fiber optics.? or what where you talking about when you said fiber.?
also are there higher categories then 5 for crossover cables that offer faster data pc to pc transfer speeds.???

Fiber is still a bit pricey. Not really necessary for what you are doing. Standard Cat5, with a 10/100/1000 NIC would be fine.
OK, quick breakdown. Each computer must have an ethernet network card installed and functioning correctly. Then, if you are not using a hub or router, you need a special cable (a crossover cable) to connect the two machines together. This cable is identicle to Cat5 except the wires are flipped (hence crossover) and it tells the two PCs that they are directly linked together.
My fiber comment in a previous post was a reply to your question about which method is fastest for data transfer. Sorry for the confusion.
Check out howstuffworks.com and read up on computer networks. A pretty good read for a network noob.

ok i get how the crossover cable and the networking setup works.
But what i was asking was: are there cables like a fiber optic crossover cable or something, that I can use to transfer files between 2 of my PC's faster than a regular CAT 5 crossover cable faster than 100Mbps..???

To use fiber, you need network cards that support it. This is where the price starts to go up. With just standard ethernet, you are limited to using Cat5 ethernet cable.

ok, well aside from the pricey Fiber Optics i did a lil research on Gigabit Ethernet, and from what i read it is possible to transfer data at 2Gbps with full duplex enabled, please correct me if im wrong though... would this be a more reasonable & cheaper solution than going the fiber optic route..??? because 2Gbps = 256MBps data transfer is fast enuf for me for transfering files direclty between 2 PC's..!!!
also i found this Linksys notebook Gigabit ExpressCard adapter http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/Linksys_Gigabit_ExpressCard...
it says that "The card supports 802.1p traffic prioritization, and has automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection at all speeds, so you don't have to worry about the cable type." does this mean that i wouldnt need a CAT 6 gigabit crossover cable & the adapter would be doing the crossover function itself when using a standard cat 5 regular ethernet cable, or what does that mean exactly.???
