Depends on your definition of "best". However, I can vouch for the Sony 500AX because it is very fast (DVD-/+R upto 4X, DVD-/+RW 2.4X), maybe not the absolute fastest in each repective category but close enough. Add in the support for "both" formats + and - discs, it wins in my book because of compatibility. All this for less than $350 USD (most places are selling for around $320).

Where to buy, well, most retail computer/electronic stores -- BestBuy, Circuit City, etc. Online, most computer-centric major store will have it too. Most likely you'll trade sales tax/shipping costs so you generally come out ahead buying online. CNet's www.shopper.com is a good source for comparing "quality" stores to buy online. I haven't had the best luck from companies listed on pricewatch or mysimon -- I unknowningly bought a grey-market camera from a company listed on mysimon. Of course, this doesn't speak for all companies listed on those services (either way). I stay with the major companies, pay attention to the "bizrate" or other store quality indexes.

Enjoy.

Sony is coming out with a new series 510 to replace the 500 series in both internal and external burniers. I asked Sony what would be the difference, this is their reply:

Thank you for your interest in the Sony DVD Burners.

The DRU510 Burners have a faster Writing Speed when compared to the DRU500 Burners. The DRU510 Burners have a lower transfer rate of 11.4 MBytes/sec when compared to the 33 MBytes/sec in the DRU500 Burners. Also, the DRU510 Burners have a lower access time of 160 ms in comparison to 200 ms in the DRU500 Burners."
(Unquote)

The internal Sony burners are already on market and the external should be on market in June??

I've been using a Sony 500 ax 2.c firmware and it hasn't missed a beat. Records at 2x or 4x with the correct media. I have been using Verbatim +r's exclusively. They are now averaging around $2 each for 4x. I also got a Liteon 166 DVD Rom for around $37. It rips about 3 times faster than the Sony. Well worth the money. I would stay with the 500 ax. The new recorders will probably have bugs to work out. 4x is pretty fast now. I can copy a copy of a DVD I made on the fly in about 14 minutes. Good luck.
