that you can use swapmagic to load .elf files from a usb mass storage device...

Is there any way of converting backup games to this format as it would then effectively mean you could use it for hard drive games loading?

No, most games won't fit onto a USB flash. What you are thinking about is probably something like USBeXtreme or USBAdvance (http://www.hdadvance.com)

But could you then not put it onto an externally powered usb hard drive instead?
