Most movies come with sub-titles as an option...usually eng., span. and french.
But some of them have 'no subtitles'. I rip and burn mostly with DVD Shrink, but also use Decryptor when necessary.
My question is, is there a way to add english subs to a movie that doesn't come with them?

I think that to add Engilsh Subtitles to a movie that doesn't have any would be editing the whole movie.... good luck with that. I don't think it can be done by novices like ourselves! Now if Hollywood would give us their tools..........my greeeedy little hands would be burning for the chance!!!!! LOL

I must add that I don't know everything but I think the answer would be NO..... unless there is anyone else out there that knows of a program that would!

Sounds like a large project to me, but it can be done. Here is a guide using DVDLab Pro, see if it is helpful.

No I have not tried it, I think there is some new program out that will also do this, except I can't remember what it is right now. Lol, must be having one of my senior moments. Most of the time I get rid of subs, so this is not something I would tackle.

Well I guess you're not a senior as me. I've been listening to too much of my own music (loud, goes with the profession) and have lost a lot in the high range. You wouldn't believe how much better a movie is when you can actually pick up ALL of the dialog!!!!:)

So I would need to buy this other application(DVDLab Pro) and use it in conjunction with Decryptor, and it will add subs, correct?
I would go to any extreme to have subs on some of my movies that came through without them included.

I use that DVD-Lab Pro method of adding subtitles to some asian films that I have had in the past , it does do the job nicely although it's a little tricky to pick up at first (changing font & colour of text & how offset to have them etc).
I only use from part 2 of the guide onwards but gives you a great sense of whats going on in videohelp guide i must say , nice link arnie :-)

@herbsman

Thanks, glad to see that someone has tried it out. I just came across the guide and kind of tucked it away for future use. Not really got into video authoring very in depth but I thought this explained it pretty well, although as you say it can be a bit tricky :)

I thought this could not be done! Thought that you would have to know the script of the movie and have to actually write a stream with the dialogue and physically add it to the movie! I didn't know you can do it with a program! wow! And, guess what!? I recorded a movie that I didn't add into my count, it was a foreign movie from Japan and I didn't add the subtitles thinking it was built into the movie like HIDDEN DRAGGON was! It came out in Japanese and I put the DVD aside somewhere and now I have the project all laid out for me to try! Now if I can find that DVD!!!! dangit! LOL

This is the best step-by-step guide with pictures I found when I starting putting hard-sub on my movie. Go to the site below and download the software needed for the project. Those software are:

VirtualDubMod (15 day trial, but works 100% without watermark)
VirtualDub Subtitle Filter
DIVX Codec
Subtitle Workshop

Below is my thought of ConvertXtoDVD.

There's other programs that are much easier, but they do not allow you the flexibility like these programs above. I've tired VSO ConvertXtoDVD, but it has a watermark (trial) and burns the movie after applying the subtitle. The above programs allows you to convert all your movies before burning to DVD+R. My preference is that I like to create a menu before the main movie. The 4 programs allows me to create menu via Nero.

Usually the tv has a caption button that will usually pull up captions even if the movie has no subtitles...well sometimes anyway..
