it's a .AVI. can i just burn the movie to a cd-rw? the cd i have can hold up to 700MB/80 min. and the movie is 699MB

The answer to this is NO, by the time the AVI file is converted it will blow out in size to around 2+gigs so therefore you need to burn to DVD.

If you have Nero 7 I think you are able to do so.

i converted it to a vcd (video cd) i'll check if that works
