Hello there.

I'm in serious need of help.

My DVD Burner (Samsung) worked perfectly until very recently. Its been a while since I last burnt a DVD, about a month or a month and a half with several programs being installed and uninstalled since then.
Now, it doesn't burn DVD's anymore. I mean, it starts burning them normaly but when it reaches 32% (and after munching on the DVD for a bit) with Norton it ALWAYS stops the process. I already used ForceASPI 1.8 and get this with Norton InfoTool (using Norton 7.0.8.2 - updated today but the problem persists):

*For System ASPI:

WINASPI32.DLL - 4.71 (0002) - 45056b - 07-17-2002
ASPI32.SYY - 4.71 (0002) - 16877b - 07-17-2002
WINASPI.DLL - n/a (0002) - 4455b - 07-17-2002
WOWPOST.EXE - n/a - 3535b - 07-17-2002

ASPI is installed and is working properly

*Nero ASPI:

WINASPI32.DLL - 2.0.1.74 - 164112b - 11-02-2004

ASPI is installed and is working properly

(sorry for not posting print screens but don't know of an area where I can upload them)

Besides this, I also have installed DVD Shrink 3.2 which also stops burning somewhere in the middle of the process, giving me the following log:

As stated, I did upload the ASPI drivers, following the proceder described in their webpage (http://force_aspi_18.w.interia.pl/) and the latest Nero. Also reinstalled DVD Shrink to no avail.

This can only be seen with DVD's. CD recording goes without problems.

Besides all that, my specs are as follows:

Win XP Pro SP2
AMD XP 2600+
1Gb RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 with latest catalyst drivers
Maxtor 82560D3 (120Gb - Internal)
Samsung TS-H552U

If oyu need more info to help me, ask away.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Ricardo

P.S. - While searching for some solution through lots of forums, I read in some of them that StarForce might be destroying hardware. In truth I have it installed and already had one DVD burner turned into junk less than a year ago. Hope that's just all coincidence, though!

First, remove the nero serial# 5C80-xxxx-xxxx.......

The current version of nero is 7.2.0.3b, if you want to upgrade, get it here;

http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php

Theses devices have DMA disabled and are most likely in PIO mode:

CdRomPeripheral : ELBY DVD-ROM 1.0 ElbyVCD Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : VOBID InstantDrive CD 14 VOBID Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : AXV CD/DVD-ROM 2.2a sojuscsi Port 4 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : KJ7310V OJU514Q 1.0 dtscsi Port 5 ID 0 DMA: Off

Enable DMA mode, here's a guide if needed;
http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

This is very odd:

Physical memory : 1023MB (1047936kB)
Free physical memory: 73MB (75504kB)
Memory in use : 92 %

You have plenty of physical memory, but 92% of it is in use, that's way tooooooo much. Something is eating up all of your physical memory, try and shut down all unnessary apps running while trying to burn to disk, you can try accessing task manager to see what apps are running and shut them down during this process also, shut down any apps set to run on startup that you may not want running all the time they consume rescources even when not being used. It's also possible that you could also have spyware/adware consuming rescources, download and install a free spyware scanner like lava soft's adware 6.0 or spybot S&D, scan the PC and remove any nasties running on your PC.

Try using this one...
http://www.safer-networking.org/

Here:

Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2286143 (508:01.68, 4465MB)

Have shrink create smaller file sizes to keep from burning too close to the disk's outer edge(not a good thing if using poor media). This can be done in shrink's preferences, choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.

Here:

Media Specific [16..63]:
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

This info usually indicates that the burner is unhappy with your choice of media, your burner's firmware is upto date so you may need to try using another brand, go with sony DVD+Rs made in japan as stated on it's packaging, so look for that.

Here:

Burn process failed at 8x (11.080 KB/s)

Try slowing the write speed down to 4x until you're burning on a consistant basis.

Hello.

Physical memory : 1023MB (1047936kB)
Free physical memory: 73MB (75504kB)
Memory in use : 92 %

You have too much memory in use. Shutdown any programs except those being used to burn. This may be the cause of your difficulties. There isn't anything else that's obvious.

7:39:55 #11 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 289

It's not a good idea to burn too close to the outer edge of the disk. Set the target size to 4350MB.

Try reducing your burn speed to 4X as well.

If you are using DVD Shrink to backup DVDs, try using the "Create ISO image file and burn with DVD Decrypter" option and see if that works. Be sure you have set the burn speed in DVD Decrypter to 4X before running DVD Shrink. There a link to DVD Decrypter in my signature if you don't have it.

Devian,

I would stick with the version of Nero you currently have, 7.0.8.2. It's the version we've been sending people to download from FileHippo to replace their newer bugier versions.

Ok. That's what I read from some other thread with an error that resembled mine but since the solutions you presented there didn't work with me, I started this new thread.
Was just DLing the new version, but didn't do so. Would you advise me to change the serial number?

The serial number should be the same for whatever version of Nero 7 you're using.

Let's strat over from scratch and see if we can find the source of the problem. I think you said you had DVD Shrink installed. Install DVD Decrypter if it isn't already installed. Get a RW disk for testing unless you want to make some coasters.

Rip a DVD to your hard drive with whatever program(s) you normally use.
Use DVD Shrink to do whatever you need to do.
When you click the Backup! icon, select "Create an ISO file and burn with DVD Decrypter". Be sure you have previously opened DVD Decrypter and set the burn speed to 4X.

If this works we know the problem isn't with the burner and we'll go from there.

Ok, that worked perfectly.
So, all I have to do is to start burning with DVD Decrypter and stop using Nero.
Do you know of any other free software that burns data DVDs? I can't find Easy CD Creator anymore...

Use the Nero 7 General Clean Tool and uninstall Nero 7. Then reinstall Nero and see if that allows you to use Nero. Be sure to not install Nero InCD as that causes problems.

http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/General_CleanTool.html

I'm still using Nero 6, version 6.6.0.18 and have no problems with it at all, although I primarily use DVD Decrypter for burning.

Did what you said yesterday and the problem persisted. Thing is that since my last format (last year) I use these tools without problems. Only now did they start to give me problems and I can't figure out why. Even the medium... I used these DVD's before. And if that was the problem I wouldn't be able to burn them with Decripted, I think... So I'm at a total loss. Why did it stop burning since the last time I burnt a DVD (1 to 2 months ago).

Did you try burning with Nero again after quitting all the excess programs?

Try this:

Use DVD Shrink and just output an ISO file. In other words after clicking the Backup! icon in DVD Shrink, select ISO Image File in the Select Backup Target menu. Then try using Nero to burn that ISO image file. See if Nero will do that. Sometime DVD Shrink and Nero just don't communicate well for whatever reason. You may have a corrupted driver somewhere causing problems. I don't know.

Ok, thing is that I use this system for a few months (as I said, the last format was somewhere by the end of last year) and I use both Nero and Shrink for quite some time now.
I just can't figure out what the problem is. Most probably something installed a corrupted driver into my computer that prevents Nero and Shrink from burning correctly, but I don't know what since I've only been installing video games and Macromedia Flash plus some plug ins to FireFox. Can't remember anything else. :(

You pick a restore point back a few months and see if things work OK. I seldom use DVD Shrink to control my burns. I usually use Shrink and dump out an iso file. When I have several ISO files to burn I'll fire up Decrypter and burn them all or stick them in an ImgBurn queue. I don't use Nero for burning unless I have a VIDEO_TS file for burning or a CD.

Yeah, looks like I have to do the same thing until I format my computer again, since I don't enjoy using the system restore functionality.

Well, thanks anyway. I'm burning again. :)

You're welcome. I never use the restore function either. I just reformat every six months if not sooner. I use Ghost so I always have data backups. I do fresh installs of all the applications.

About the same happens here. Although the new format is taking longer than usual due to rl and lazyness.
I never worked with Ghost, so I don't work with it. Just keep lots of RW's with the info I really need and once it is all installed I copy it to the right locations.
Still, this Summer I do need to format the computer to solve certain bugs once and for all.
