Burn Failed - Huh?

I have been using Nero Vision Express 2 for the longest time and it's worked like a champ up until recently. It suddenly started crapping out when trying to burn AVI files to DVD. I upgraded to Vision 4 and it's still doing it. Here's a copy of my log. I have no idea what is going on. Search down to ###### and you'll find the error Nero gives.

EDIT: Vision log removed. Nerohistory log a few posts down.

It's always troubling to see devices with DMA not enabled. If these are internal drives, DMA should be enabled. I don't think this is the problem here though.

Nero didn't ID the media. I assume media was in the burner. What brand and type was it?

I never let NeroVision do a burn. I always dump a VIDEO_TS folder or write to the Image Recorder and then burn those if their creation is successful.

You might want to post the Burning ROM NeroHistory log for the burn that is located in this path:

Program Files -> Nero -> Nero 7 -> Core -> NeroHistory

Omit the serial number and any other identifying info before posting.

First things first. How do I enable the DMA?

Also I've been using mostly Verbatim DVD-Rs lately. But I've used Fuji, Maxell, Dynex, and others in here, no problem.

Oh no, a vision log. Oh well, i hate em, but i have to read them anyway.

You have enough memory for ripping, but it looks like you have many programs open. Things like anti-virus programs, and other programs can conflict with a burn. When burning, shut down all programs not needed for the burn process. Don't multi-task if you are having burn failures. I know some ppl do it, and multi-core systems are coming out, but if your system is having problems burning, cut back on the amount of tasks it has to perform.
Another bad thing about vision logs.. They hide your serial number in there. Yours is here at least, an may be hiding in there some more, but now you know what to look for.:

I just listed the start of them.
I suggest you go back to your post and edit out those numbers before someone steals your copy. The nerohistory.txt file is the best one to post. If you cant find it where laddyboy listed, just do a "search" under the "start" tab on a windows sytem, search all files and folders and type in nerohistory.txt. It will find it for you.
Vision logs dont tell us your firmware versions on your burners, and that could be part of your problem if yours is not up to date.
The error listed by vision was something to do with the file conversion of the AVIs you had, but i am not sure what that was. The more important error was the burn errors, further down:

which points to media, but we dont know what media you were using, your firmware version, what speed you tried to burn this at, etc.. All because of the vision log. Its not your fault, it is nero's fault for putting that thing in there along with the best log to use, located in another place. Post the other log, and we will have more data to work with.

Your burner firmware need updating. You're several versions behind. The newest is A187 available here:

You're using good media but probably burning too fast. A good rule of thumb is to burn at half or less the rated speed of the media.

Whatever burn this logged it was doomed to failure from this:

Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: -1 ( 0:00.-1, 0MB)

Try outputing a folder to the hard drive or an iso file to the Image Recorder. If you have a folder on the hard drive, burn it with Nero limiting your speed. If you have an ISO file from the image recorder, burn that with DVD Decrypter and see what happens.

Be sure to upgrade your firmware first and be sure to limit your burn speed.

Attempting Firmware Upgrade, fails about 80% through and the program crashes. =(

This firmware can be used on below drives :
(1) DVDRW IDE 16X 0056.HEX
(2) DVDRW IDE 16X A187.HEX

On the next screen it goes 'The current version of your DVDRW IDE16X (0) firmware is A187

But the program never finished. And what's that 0056.hex?

.hex is just the firmware file extension. HEX = hexidecimal in this case.

Try installing A07M again and then just go up one upgrade version to A07R. See if that'll work.

There are 2 versions of the drive, one came with firmware 0056 and the other started with A054. That's the one that will upgrade to A187 eventually. It should be the version you have.

Well I downloaded every firmware and found it will go up to A087 and actually say 'Reboot your computer', the A187 explodes before it finishes but every time I run it if tells the next firmware that the current version IS A187. I don't know if it's doing its job or not but since it crashes I won't trust it. Going to see what happens with this.

If reducing the speed, updating firmware doesn't work.. what should I check next?

Turned off anti virus. And Zone Alarm. Set it to 2x burn speed. It acts weirdly. Sometimes it crashes during Creating Menus, sometimes it starts to encode episode 1 and then explodes there. In either case, it doens't make it very far at all. Typically it's just slightly into the first episode. It SHOWS it in the preview window, so it acts like it knows what it's working with, then it just arghs out.

I think you need to do a clean reinstall of Nero. The program is choking on something.

Run the Nero General Clean Tool to get rid of everything Nero.

Then reinstall version 7.0.8.2 from FileHippo if necessary. The latest version of N7 at the Nero site is not always stable. Don't install InCD -- ever.

Well, still fails. I installed a new codec pack. Still fails. I moved the files to another drive. Still fails. I verified the Nero version is the one you mentioned. Still fails. Tried writing to hard drive instead of to disc. Still fails. STILL BOGGLING. I have no idea what the hell is going on. =( Tried burning a DIFFERENT set of files. Still fails. At this point the only thing I can think of is to convert the avis to mpeg in TMPEG and then seeing what happens.

Have you only been trying to convert and burn AVI files this whole time? Have you tried just backing up and burning a commercial DVD? Did you try burning the ISO file from Nero with DVD Decrypter? At this point, you are attempting to isolate the problem as hardware or software. If you can burn successfully with DVD Decrypter, then hardware is not the problem. If not, is there someone who has a system where you can install your burner and test there. If after installing in another system the burner still doesn't work, the burner is likely bad.
