How are you swapping your backup? Fliptop, slide tool, magic tool? I doubt that the backups are faulty, but rather you aren't swapping the discs the correct way

Try your discs you made in your friend's ps2.. if they work in his then you'll know that it's either you're not using the slide tool correctly or you need to do as dan said and clean your laser/adjust etc... maybe take your ps2 to your friend's place too, so you can get some help from him.

If your ps2 is old, you need to use high quality DVD-R discs.
V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

I actually disagree and think regardless of how old your PS2 is, you need to use high quality DVD-R :)

People have messed it up many many times and posted that there was something wrong with their swap magic discs on here or are they doing the backup properly... the most common thing that they did wrong was not locking the disc tray back into position after closing the tray... I know this for fact as it used to happen a lot.

The PS2 would not read the backup if the slide had not been done properly. As several people have mentioned, it is probably the media/the way you have burnt the disc. Make sure you are using high quality such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R. Also, make sure you don't have anything else running whilst you are burning the disc, it can lead to a bad burn.
Also, have a look at the - Games stuttering and skipping or just not booting up at all?
