Hi.
I am using Nero 7 on Windows XP with SP2.
I am on a laptop with an internal CD writer.
I also use an external DVD writer on this computer.
So...whenever I start up Nero, it is stuck on the DVD formats.
This means that I can not write to CDRs.
The only way I can change formats (from DVD to CD, vice-versa) is when I connect the external DVD writer to the computer.
Is there anyway to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sneakerz.

What do you mean by stuck? Are you using StartSmart, Nero Express, or Nero Burning ROM? Do you mean the dropdown Recorder menu on StartSmart and Nero Express don't have any entries other than for DVD recorders or DVD on the StartSmart screen? Are the Image Recorder options showing up on Nero Express?

You might do a clean reinstall of Nero by uninstalling with the Nero Clean Tool and then doing a fresh install of Nero.

Version 7.0.8.2 is recommended for Nero 7 as it seems stable. It can be downloaded here:

Okay...
Let me clear things up.
I'm using Nero Burning ROM.
After opening Nero up, the "New Compilation" menu comes up.
This is where the problem is.
It is supposed to allow me to select between burning a CD or DVD (and BluRay).
However, ever since I started using the external writer, I can no select between the two.
So now, the setting remains at DVD and I can not switch to CD.
Everything seems to work fine as long as I have the external drive connected.
However, once it is disconnected from the computer, I can not choose to burn to a CD (using the internal writer).

Everything also seems to work fine in Nero Express.
It allows me to write a CD, while Nero Burning ROM does not.

So the dropdown menu to select between CD and DVD in the New Compilation window of Nero Burning Rom is stuck on DVD. CD does not appear in that dropdown menu. Is this correct?

Well, that's basically it.
In the dropdown menu, it shows "CD" but the options are to write to DVD.
The dropdown area is greyed, meaning it can't be changed.
Here's a pic...

That's odd to say the least. What version of Nero 7 is this? If Nero Express works OK, it would seem to be a bug in the Burning ROM program.

Two things:

Try using the Safely Remove Hardware wizard on the Taskbar when dismounting the external burner.

Do a fresh reinstall of Nero 7.0.8.2 as described above in an earlier post.

I will try doing a clean install with 7.0.8.2 later on today.
I'll tell you how that goes.

I always use the Safely Remove Hardware option, but that doesn't seem to affect this problem.
I've tried restarting the computer after disconnecting the external drive, but the problem is still there.

Thanks for the help.
