I want to backup some of my games for ps2 and i did read the good media and stickys. But i still have problems. I use verbatims DVD-R 16x...i can't get 8x they're not imported where i live and i cant buy online.
I used DVD decrypter to iso read then iso write i burned 4 discs at 4x...it's the slowest speed i can select. The burner i use is Pioneer 108 with updated firmware.
The problem is after i burned them my ps2 doesn't boot a single one of them. My ps2 is modded so i can boot backups i tried it with some friends discs.
So am i doing something wrong???? Here is what the media looks like.

Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:MCC 03RG20 ]

Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [MCC 03RG20 ]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]

Since your PS2 boots your friend's discs, I'm assuming the laser is still working fine, so here's a few questions:

1) What game are you trying to burn?
2) What modchip do you have?
3) Have a look here: http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6155.cfm . The discs seems to be the real ones, but there's still the problem of them being 16x and not 8x...

I'm guessing 1) and 3) are the most likely problems, but need more information :)

Thank you for the quick reply. Well i'm burning my games i want to take care of the originals and play the backups. If you wanted titles then a few are NFS most wanted, Budokai 2-3, God of war, Bloodrayne2. These are the ones i burned and failed aparently.
Regarding the modchip...i have no idea, something with infinity i think.
And that link basically says the discs are fine right? I mean they even tested them with my burner. But they don't mentin anythink about the really really picky ps2 laser.
Oh the other dvd alternatives i have are samsungs and a whole bunch of no-names. I bought verbatim and thought the 16x isn't THAT big of an issue.

some PS2's can play 16X just fine while other can not.
I did a test this weekend because i bought some Philips DVD+R 16X discs for backing up my movies.
Burned GTA Liberty City Stories at 4X and it worked just fine on my old V7 with Swap Magic
Can not test on my V12 until it returns from getting further modded with the internal hard drive.

I really doubt that 16x are causing the problem...try burning them at 8x or 12x as i have 16x discs as i was having trouble getting hold of some 8x Verbatims and my 16x work fine.

What version PS2 have you got?...if you were running your friends backups then you then the only problem i can see is at your end...so i dunno maybe try getting a friend to burn the ISO for you? See what discs your friends used and try borrow one of them?

:O

I have a v7 version of PS2. And it pisses me off cause my friends backups which worked and booted on it were so no-names...princo and datawrite, but at 8x and written at 2x.
Oh and i don't know if it matters or not but i also burned some video dvd-s with the same verbatims and it works perfectly. Those i did at 8x

videos will be much easier, they are not at all picky about the media and for some reason the PS2 will read them. Games on the other hand just seem to be very picky.
Your friend's games may work now but he also may be very sorry in the future that he did not use better media when either his games stop working because the cheap dye wore out. Or his PS2 stops working because the stress of reading the cheap dye has fried his laser.

Try a few burning speeds, start at 4X, then up to 6X then 8X
the discs you have are good quality. I also have a V7 and it did play my Philips 16X DVD+R discs. Have never tried the 16X DVD-R
But i tried 4X first and it works, 8X did not work as well.
At first it would try to load but keep getting stuck. So i cleaned my laser and it has been golden since.
when you burn these with DVD Decrypter, are you selecting the MDS file? you should be if you are not.
Have you tried your discs on your friends ps2 to see if his will play them?
If you have a real Matrix Infinity chip then you have one of the best so i would think that once you burn them right they should play.
Have you made any GAME back ups that do work?
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=infinity_i...
there is some info if you have a Matrix Infinity chip.
If you do not have the latest firmware for that chip then i would upgrade it. But MAKE SURE it is a real Matrix Infninty chip first. Upgrading the firmware on a clone chip i have heard will just fry it.

I called the person who modded the PS2 and yea it's matrix infinity chip. I paid him 70$ for the thing 3 months ago.
I don't have a .mds file, i make iso's with decrypter not alcohol, i should try it i guess. I only used decrypter so far.
And yes i only made one that works, prince of persia warrior within. But i made that from a ntsc version so it's in black and white. But it does boot up. The only 8x we have here is crap and i wouldnt touch it normally but i think i have no choice. I just need 27 backups...from all the games i usually play. I read it's not illegal if you own them to make backups.
Oh and my friends ps2 doesn't boot them either but the guy who modded my ps2 brought his own ps2 and they all work on his. And it's the exact same version and same chip and everything.

Ok i solved the problem i think. I burned them at 6x and now they're ok. I only want to ask will this stress the laser? Does the writing speed have an impact on it?

You should be fine, i have heard of people burning them faster than that, and it is only 2X above what most people burn them at anyway.
Great to hear it was just a burning speed problem and that you got it all worked out.
That is why my posts are a bit long winded. I try to think of ANYTHING that might help.

But when you use DVD Decrypter it should make an MDS and ISO file so i am not sure why you do not get both.
