ok what ps2 hav u got the old bulky style or the new slimline.
then its upto u, swap magic is the cheaper option and also keeps ur warranty intact.
modchip is the best option if u have the money to spend

have a look here http://www.swapmagic3.com/ also if ur in the us then get the NTSC version and if ur in europe get the PAL version.
u will also need to get the required tool for ur ps2 depending on what version it is, there is the slim tool magic keys and so on

depends on what version you have. You need to find the number on the console like SCPH-70000 and look it up on a list of PS2 versions.
Then that will tell you which slimline version you have.
The v12 from waht i remember is the only one that you can mod without voiding your warranty. The tools you need for the higher V13 and up versions you need to open it to install one so that will void the warranty.
You do not just need Swap Magic 3.6
you need that and the tools which go by many names but all dso the same thing. something like this
http://www.gocybershopping.com/customer/product.php?productid=146...
That is why you have to know what version you have so that you get the correct set of tools.
Either that or you can buy an aftermarket flip top instead with your Swap Magic
http://www.gocybershopping.com/customer/product.php?productid=129...
do some research before you decide what to do. A good mod chip is way better and easier than Swap Magic, but you will have to put out about $100 for the chip + install + shipping to get it installed.
DMS4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, Crystal Chip V1.1 are about the best 3 chips out there. Beware of those cheap $20 chips as they are not so good.

V12/13 Identification.
SCPH-700XX = slim PSTwo Version 12/13 PS2: All 700XX models are the slim PSTwo V12 or V13 where XX can be any combination of numbers. To tell the difference between the V12 and V13 you can look at the back of your console. There will be two network ports on the V12, one Ethernet Port and one Phone Line Port. The V13 will only have one port and it will be the Ethernet Port. Look at the pictures below for an example. The cases are gutted but you will get the idea. The top case is a V12 and the bottom is a V13.
look on the back at the ports to tell if it is V12 or V13
but these keys will fit V12-V14
but if it is V12 then you should be able to spare the warranty, V13 and it is voided.
http://www.magickeys.net/MagicKeys%202.html plus these keys are stainless steel and not those cheap plastic one's
