I have a few NTSC videos that I want to convert to good ol' PAL format! Here's the info.
Most of the are 29.97 NTSC and I have looked in the internet for info on how to convert them. Nowhere at all tells me to convert the film directly to 25.00fps. They then tell me to use AVIFRate to change the headers of the AVI to 25.00fps.
To get the 29.97fps file to 23.97fps though, alot of places are telling me to convert the video using Virtualdub, using the "Inverse telecine (3:2 pulldown removal)" selecting the option "Reconstruct from fields - adaptive" to remove the extra frames in the video. Other places tell me to use the same utility, but to just use the box that says convert the video to 23.97fps?!?
God it's all confusing. I tried using the 3:2 pulldown method but found that the video ended up with horizontal lines running across the screen every now and then. Any idea what causes this?
I tried the other method too but ended up increasing the length of the video by 20s for every minute of video!
DGPulldown http://neuron2.net/dgpulldown/dgpulldown.html will change the framerate of a video without affecting its A/V sync (this is usually an affect of changing the movie's framerate, alas).
Of course , PAL to NTSC will also require a screen change, since NTSC = 720x480, PAL = 720x576.
If you use, as encoder, TMPGenc, it will do both (but read also my response to another post, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/353351 ). It will both change the framerate and the resolution (So DGPulldown isn't needed).
If you use other encoders, you must check that they change:
1) the video resolution, by keeping aspect ratio:
NTSC DVD to PAL DVD: 720x480 -> 720x576 adding black bars up and down or
AVI to PAL DVD : for instance, 640x368 -> 720x576 by resizing and adding black bars (rescaling the movie by 9/8 would create a 720x418 movie: you must add (576-418)/2 pixels of black bars up and down to have 720x576]
2) the framerate (for instance, 29,97 ---> 25).
If your encoder doesn't change 2), use DGPulldown (setting 29,97 and 25 in 'custom' box).
Alas, you'll need an encoder, to perform this change, and the best encoders I use are (TMPGenc [too slow, for VBR encoding, and therefore i suggested to perform DVD CBR encoding] and CCE [fast, but very expensive and too complicated, since it needs additional 'filters' to change anything, both fps and resolution).
Won't you desire to make a 23.976 fps 640x368 MPG, will you?
