P2P backend for OpenMap

I'd like to start a new project called OpenMap that will gather and collate GPS coordinate route data from participating GPS device owners, and gradually assemble it into a free global map for the benefit of all. There would be a very large number of small files distributed, which will contain the original GPS vector data from individual users, as well as larger, rasterized versions of the collated data, partitioned into geospatial regions and subregions. I want to distribute the data through an existing P2P network, and I'd like to hear the pros and cons of using the various P2P protocols out there for this purpose. I'd also welcome general feedback about the concept of the project. Thanks!
