I have connected my computer directly from my modem to my computer and have disabled my firewall. I'm wondering if there are other steps I can take to ensure high download speeds.

Let me know if there is more information I can provide for better suggestions.

Thanks

No firewall! If you're using a client with DHT then you are broadcasting your IP to anybody else with same. You are also open to scanners working block by block, your machine is just waiting its turn. I'm seeding through PeerGuardian2, OutpostPro, a linux firewall box and the router's basic firewall. I've got slow DSL and I've been reading AF forums for the last three hours.
Ports not working. Have you forwarded port for client in your router? Look for you model and instructions applicable here: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
Test your DSL speed here: http://testmy.net/ and limit your upload to a maximum 80% of what you have otherwise you'll flood your connection which will result in slower download. If you've set your download to max and your upload to minimum you ain't "sharing" and other clients will look for mutual exchange hence slowing down your results. If your using Azureus take the results you get from testmy.net and enter them at: http://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html it'll give you the optimum settings to put in your client, if you're not using Az they'll give you an indication of optimum settings you may find useful... As you've turned your firewall off its appropriate I end with: Good Luck!
