Hi my question is to those savy with multi media on ds.
With all the hardware required to simply play movies and music on my dsl
a m3/ez4/supercard= 30-80$
a passkey/card/superpass= 20-25$
a sd/cf card= iv'e seen 25-60$
plus no garantee of working included software
is it realy worth it? I have some movies that I realy want to watch on this badboy but the cost of doing so is ****ing insane.
so does anyone see some type of streamlined way to do this coming in the near future or am I sol. Becouse these prices plus no garantee of any of it being compatible is bs and that is a shame cause I realy want to whip out my ds on plane rides and watch some of my movies.

The super card/super pass and an SD card from pricewatch.com are probably the cheapest way to go for just roms. It has been awhile since I have looked into them though, I decided to get a PSP instead.

The old SuperKey works with EZIV Lite. The new one won't, and the Passcard3 won't either.
While many of the flash carts and adapters lack included software, it's all readily available on their respective sites. Many of which have custom versions of Moonshell compiled and ready for use. Since you plan on using it for multimedia and back-ups, you're going to Moonshell (DS multimedia player) and whatever software necessary to patch games so that they are playable on carts.

...couple things. so if I have to convert my media/roms into a special format to play them on my ds will the software that "comes" with these devices do it for me and while i've seen some software updates up on winsunx for some of the devices, how would I go about installing them?
also while I have seen some of the software mentioned at winsunx what are the sites I should be going to for the actual software?peace.
and could you recommend a good/compatible hardware combination for me?
Iwas thinking of going with the ez4 lite (not stick out version)and a super key but I see some that there are more gba oriented ones that have memory built in.

woah I just saw a video that showed someone using a super card on a ds lite but without using any kind of device in the ds slot(no the ds was not flashed)and just booted it up like a normal gba game on ds.
does this mean that you don't need a pass/key/card thing to make the super card/m3/ez4 work on ds or am I missing somthing?
and if you don't will it still play movies and music cause he only played a game in the video.

Good hardware combination:
M3SD (or MiniSD)
Passcard3
1GB+ SD (or MiniSD)
M3 Software download available at http://www.dualscene.net
Moonshell download available at http://mdxonline.dyndns.org/archives/nds/
Both the M3 and Supercard can boot up into a GBA mode when no Pass device is present. GBA mode is, obviously, for GBA games, the M3 does have video support when in GBA mode, but it is really crap compared to when running in DS mode.
When in GBA mode, the DS acts like a GBA, so no running of DS games/homebrew/use of the touchscreen or microphone, DS only uses the ARM7 processor, and the screen is cropped.
EDIT: Also you might want to check out http://m3wiki.emuparadise.org/index.php/Media_Card for compatible cards. As you will be watching video, I highly recommend getting a card that has scored a 5 in the 'Castlevania Test'

thank you very very very much those sites are definatly getting favorited. and not to diss your sugestion or anything but will those instructions apply to the other devices because that m3 looks like it sticks out alot like 2in alot and it kinda looks silly while the others are the size of a gba cart or less.
also whats realy good with moonshell? do I have to download that too or is it optional and if I do download it will it auto run?

Only the M3CF sticks out that far, you will find the SD and MiniSD versions of the M3 are the same size as the supercard.
Moonshell is for playing video and music on the DS, it is much better than the M3's included software.
Moonshell has two version you should know about if getting a M3.
Extension: This comes with all newer M3 firmwares, and is basically an older version of Moonshell that can be botted directly fromthe M3's main menu.
Normal: this is a normal .NDS homebrew app, which is much more up-to-date than the extension, and therefore, is recommended for better quality video playback.
I do not recommend getting any other media card adpaters (i.e. the supercard) for the DS as I do not like them, and will not help with any supercard issues, however I do reccomend the EZIV Lite and G6 Lite for the DS Lite (if you don't mind paying the extra expense for less memory)
EDIT: Also, the images on divineo can sometimes be misleading, as they show the M3CF instaed of the M3SD on some of their sites.

well I was thinking of leaning the ez4 rout but the site you gave me has no guides/downloads for them and since you seem to strongly prefer the m3 I guess that knocks out the supercard and the g6 does not support a sd card so I guess the m3 is my only real option but winsunx only sells the (professional/chinese) version of the m3 which it says has no gba fetures. so where does that leave me? and is it possible to tell me where I can find the ez4 software because its relativly cheap on winsun and I like cheap(in prices that is).peace.

I have never used the EZIV so I would not know where to get software, or how to use them, when I eventually get my DS Lite (site i bought it from ran out like 2 seconds after i clicked buy ¬_¬) I was thinking of getting the EZIV Lite, but that might take a while now.

not to sound like an ass or anything but whats your beef with the super card? the price is right, the software is avalible,I dont see any reason why it would be lesser than a m3 but then again I have used neither. so whats the problem?

Poor GBA support for a start, drains the DS's battery a hell of alot quicker, the fact I had to have mine replaced 4 times before I got one that worked and was of half-decent build quality - that broke after less than a month, dosn't support FAT32, they ripped off the M3 teams original GBAMPv2 Movie Software and claimed it as their own.
I then purchased 1 M3, had no problems with it, is very good build quality, and is much easier to use than the supercard, plus I actually get replies to my emails to the M3 team!
Other than that, I have no problem with other people wanting to buy a Supercard, I just know I won't be again.

you know after all this research/price watching I don't know if the technology is at a realy good place yet. it seeme like some more stuff is on the horizon and I don't want to get caught in the dark. I think I will just hold off for a few months see where the tech goes then make my decision. thanks ofr the help though and the input was much appreciated.
mabey i'l come back to these boards in a couple months or so anyway peace.

if your just looking for movies and music mostly and an occasional game I would recommend the gp2x over the ds, gp2x has a bigger screen and better sound, it is open source so it is mainly open source games and emulators, so it all depends on what is more important games with commercial support or mp3 and movies

And what if you want both commercial games and homebrew? I think the DS makes a good console for both, though I was thinking od getting a GP2X a while ago, just don't have the money at the moment.
And now the 2.50 and 2.60 firmwares of the PSP have been cracked wide-open with full kernel access, that makes the PSP a good contender for homebrew too. (though I have 1.50, so I already have the best homebrew for my psp :P)
