Hello All.

I have had great success in backing up all my other SNL titles, but the Best of Cheri Oteri is giving me a headache! :(

I've tried a few attempts using DVD Decrypter and DVD FAB Decrypter (version 2.9.7.9) without success. Well, it seems as though it rips fine, but when I go to Recode it (using Nero Recode 2), I get the following error at 26% (right about when the main movie starts):

"Nero Recode encountered an error an cannot continue. Failed to read from the file VTS_01_1.VOB. Invalid access to memory location."

The disc is clean and I honestly don't think it's defective. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing there's a part of that VOB that isn't being read, since the whole disc is 6.27GB and the folder size after ripping is only 5.84GB. Something's going on...

Any thoughts? Suggestions? I know there has to be a way to do it... and that's where you guys come in (hopefully). I've heard of something called VOB Blanker and PGC Edit. Would those help solve this issue? Are there guides for them?

By the way, I tried searching on this one, but didn't find anything here on AD.

Thanks to all who can help in advance! Much appreciated,

Gregg

You might want to try running your output from DVDFab Decrypter through VobBlanker (http://www.videohelp.com/~jsoto/VobBlanker/VobBlanker_2110_exe.zip)

There is no installer package, so just open vobblanker.exe from within the ZIP file. In the upper left, browse to the location of your VIDEO_TS.IFO file. In the box under that, select a location for the output to go and finally, press the PROCESS!! button at the bottom.

Hopefully, that will get you fixed. Let us know either way.

Good Luck!

Thanks WayneK, I appreciate your effort. I had high hopes for VOB Blanker...

Unfortunately, that didn't work. Still got the same error as before, when trying to Recode... same spot (VTS_01_1.vob).

Everything with VOB Blanker worked great though, so at least I got some experience with that. I left all the settings the same and did only what yousaid to. Not sure if it will help or not, but here's the log:

The only thing I didn't do (come to think of it), is choose the foler that I had ripped using FAB Decrypter. I used the folder from AnyDVD. That shouldn't matter though... as I mentioned the size of the folder contents were the same (5.84GB) versus the original DVD of ~6.27GB.

I just got the DVD, so I haven't even tried it in a standalone player. I always like to back-up while the disc is brand new. Maybe it's a bad press... who knows!

I'll post back later. If anyone else has ideas/comments/suggestions, please feel free to jump in.

Thanks. Have a nice one,

Gregg

Hi gsmackfan
Since you have AnyDVD try having that run in the background w/ Shrink or take those files you ripped with AnyDVD and open them in Shrink.
See if that does the trick.

Hello Binkie.

Thanks a MILLION for the suggestion!!! DVD Shrink blasted right through during the encoding. I was beginning to think there wouldn't be a way to back it up. I thought there may have been a new protection or something...

So... just curious here, what made this work? Was it Shrink itself? or having AnyDVD running in the background? I ask because I am curious to know how having AnyDVD running in the background benefits when backing-up DVDs.

I never used Shrink before, but I see it's talked about (and used) quite a bit here on AD. I'll read up on some other threads and mess with it some more, but is it basically just another burning program?
And, is it always freeware? I downloaded and installed version 3.2.0.15 and don't recall seeing anything saying 'this is your free 21 day trial' or anything similar.

Thanks again, I greatly appreciate it. I knew the guys on AD would come through for me!

Have a nice one,

Gregg

If you try to use AnyDVD with Recode and it balks, always try AnyDVD with Shrink and it will almost 100% handle the encoding when Recode can't.

You're welcome gsmackfan!

Shrink is freeware. It's an encoder/compressor similar to Recode except it has no burn engine of it's own. It will use Nero's. It will also autoburn w/ DVD Decrypter if you pick that option.
It will also remove the copy protection whereas Recode can't. But it can't handle some of the newer copy protection by itself. That's where AnyDVD can fit nicely.
Shrink has been updated in about 2 years and no more updates either - the developer works for (or did) Nero.
