Hello,I have a dell 4600 with a dvd drive and a dvd burner. The burner is a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A 10FD (ide) I use 1 click copy & anydvd to backup dvd's. All was working fine until I installed an update for the anydvd. The next time I tried to use the burner I was going to make a cd and the program said there was no drive to burn on. After digging I found out somehow the drive is "disabled" and windows will no enable it? I have tried unplugging it, plugging it back in. Tried to restore but windows will not restore to an earlier date either. Now I admit im not very smart at this stuff. So any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

The CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device
To make sure that the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is recognized as a recordable drive, make sure that the Recording tab appears in the CD drive properties:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive, click Properties, and then look for the Recording tab.
If the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recording drive by Windows XP, but the drive is recognized only as a CD-ROM, confirm that the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is compatible with Windows XP. (For example, confirm that the drive is compatible with Windows XP if the Recording tab does not appear.) To do this, see the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). For more information about the HCL, see the "Hardware Device and Device Driver Compatibility" section.

Thanks for your reply. The burner is the burner that came with the computer when i bought it new. It is recognizing the the DVD/CD rom drive that is installed but it will not recognize the DVD Burner drive. I have tried booting up with the drive unplugged and then plugged it back in thinking it would see new hardware but that didnt work either. The comp. is 4 years old, would installing a new dvd burner work? If so I will upgrade to that.....any thoughts.
