Hello everyone, I'm experiencing a unsual problem.
I'm a Wanda to Kyozou (Shadow of the Colossus) Japanese version owner and I download the PAL Multi 5 version in order to reexperience this masterpiece.
The problem is, I get really long loading time until the main menu. (It depends on the DVD I burn on).
On Philips 16X DVD+R I burned 3 backups with the following settings :
DVD 1 :8X Results were: No booting
DVD 2 :4X Results were: 5 seconds until Booting & Blackscreen.
DVD 3 :2X Results were: Direct Booting with long loading times until the main menu.
The game worked but with a lot of bugs like the main character wandering in emptyness until the environement loaded.
Today, I tried with some Microlux 8X DVD-R. I made 2 backups using them using the following settings :
DVD 1 :2X Results were: Barable loading times and a playable game. The only major problem was the loading time during the exploration sequences.
Furthermore, the evironment got loaded correctly but sometimes it took a couple of seconds for it to get loaded.
DVD 2 :4X Results were: I couldnt get to the main menu.
A couple of hours ago I tried with a Traxdata 8X DVD making a backup burning at 4X. But, I couldnt load the game with the swap magic.
Just now, I burned 2 backups again using 2 philips 8X DVD-R and I couldnt get to the main menu.
I dont know what to do anymore and I lent my game to a friend for the holydays. Perhaps a rebuilding? I tought of that but the TOC is still OK and after a couple of net surfing, it didn't seem anyone needed to do it...
I hope I was clear and that you'll be able to help me.
Thank you, Shiroi.
PS : I have a Satin Silver PS2 and the lens seems still fine. Any other game works properly wether its a backup or original.
I just Grandia 3, FFXII and Metal Gear Subsistance backups and they all worked fine.

Try using things like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Sony DVD-R 8x... they seem to be the best discs, and also you'll find that people have suggested that DVD-R 8x are the most suitable for PS2.
I'm assuming you've burnt this using DVD Decrypter? If not have a look in my sig., there's a link to how to burn discs using DVD Decrypter :)

Thanks for the reply, I'm looking at your sig right now and I've burned the backup using Alcohol 120% and a couple of them using Nero. But, I'm going to give it a shot. I've used it once for my Xenosaga ^^.
Thanks again. I'll tell you what happens next.
By the way, I played with the most suitable copy this evening and I could get to the third colossus. Therefore, I had to experience about 4 times unloaded environments again... And, the performance of the game on the same DVD are pretty unstable...
I mean that the first time I tried to load the game and it freezed. The second time, it went perfectly fine. And during the 3rd fight, the game did something weired... As the colossus hit the ground using his club shaped arm, the screen turned black and I realised that the video signal was OFF... I then pressed the start button to see if I could get to the options and the signal got back on but... the game made a reset...
Not a full one though, it just took me back to the first loading screen until the language selection screen...

It could mean that your laser is dying, try cleaning the laser lens and if need to, you could also adjust the laser: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1
What version is your PS2? Over the time I've learnt that the best way to play games on the PS2 is to get connect a HDD to the PS2, depending on what version your PS2 how you do this will differ though. It's not a cheap investment, but I think it's worth the money.

I have a V10 Satin silver PS2. Like I said earlier, I doubt the lens is dying. Indeed, any other backup works perfectly fine. I dont have any video/sound desyncronisation, no other loading problems... I even tried Ico again and it worked fine... Any original game boots normaly to... I just dont get it, I even tried Forbidden Siren :P to see if I would experience any drawdistance problem but no ^^. And ofcourse I didnt even get a single "Insert a PS2 Disk".

Hmm, it could be that particular game that's causing problems, but I haven't heard of a problem regarding that game...
If you have a V10, what you could do is get a network adaptor, an IDE HDD, and get HDLoader, then you would be able to run games off your HDD, it's faster, and don't use your laser. The down side of course is that you'd need to go out and buy a network adaptor + HDD, which isn't the cheapest thing in the world.
Apart from that, I'd still say give your laser lens a clean, there's no harm in doing that :)

Ok so I cleaned the lens and played Kingdom Hearts 2 for about 6 hours no problems... But Shadow of the Colossus is still pissing me... I'm downloading the american backup maybe it'll work :).
I'll keep you tuned, in the worse case I'll just get a network adapter, I have plenty of IDE HDD so this isnt going to be a problem. But is there a way to download the HDloader? So I can boot it using my swap magic? It could become handy since I'm a little short on cash these days :P.

Ok guys I just got a modchiped PS2 for free ^^, a friend said that I could keep it if I fixed it :P. I used some alcohol with a tissue to clean the lens and Xenosaga and Shadow of the Colossus just worked fine. But I dont know which chip there's in.
The only unusual thing is that the Playstation 2 Logo you can see when you launch the game is kinda blured.

Man, you are lucky to have a friend who gives you a not working PS2 and it took you what, a few minutes to fix it? :P
It could just be the chip that's doing that, if the screen is fine when you play the game, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

He told me that the console freezed when the loading times were to long but luckily, I dont play those kind of game like burnout 3... :)
By the way, I dont know anything about the PStwo is the network adaptor included? I can see an ethernet plug... Are they any cool Exploits or anything? Well I'll just go have fun with it ^^.

Yep the slim PS2 has built in ethernet, unfortunately there's no exploit that I know of. Is the PS2 you are given a slim one? At a guess it's probably V12, which is known to have laser problems

I've checked and its a SCPH 70004 so I assume it's a V12... Its a satin silver version to but it seems all the games I couldnt run whit my original PS2 no matter what kind of media they are burned on work on this new baby.
PS: Is there a way to know what chip I'm running on?
