I recently purchased a Fliptop and Swap Magic v3.6 to use with my v1 PS2. Initially I used 4x TDK DVD-R's, and over half of my backups worked perfectly. However, some of the backups when loaded via Swap Magic would just leave blank screens.

I decided then to order some Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's from SuperMediaStore.com after reading about all the praise they get on this site, and I received them today. I first tried a game that worked perfectly even with the made-in-Taiwan TDK's: Super Robot Wars MX. To my surprise, things were much less smooth with the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R. With the Taiyo Yuden there was a long pause on the start screen before I could choose an option, unlike the TDK copy. Also, the Taiyo Yuden copy showed long pauses before voices, unlike the TDK one.

I then tried a different game that worked perfectly with the TDK's: Grandia III. The Taiyo Yuden version didn't even boot. After that I tried an ISO that didn't work with the TDK's, and that didn't change with the Taiyo Yuden's.

I use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO's. I burned the TDK's at 4x, their rated speed, and I burned the Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's at 4x like recommended. I also checked the media ID just in case they weren't genuine TY's, but they were. Does anyone know what might be the problem here?

You could try burning at a lower speed. I do all my backups in 2x and never had a problem. You could also just have bad luck and got a bad batch of TYs, although I doubt that's the case.

I used Nero CD-DVD Speed to test out a PS2 backup on the Taiyo Yudens:

General Information
Drive: PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8631
Firmware: CD21
Disc: DVD-R (TYG02)
Selected speed: Maximum
PI errors
Maximum: 183
Average: 86.98
Total: 10351
PI failures
Maximum: 0
Average: 0.00
Total: 0
PO failures: 0
Jitter
Maximum: 10.4 %
Average: 9.54 %
Scanning Statistics
Elapsed time: 3:49
Number of samples: 120
Average scanning interval: 8.00 ECC
Glitches removed: 0

It got a quality score of 82.

I then tested a TDK:

General Information
Drive: PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8631
Firmware: CD21
Disc: DVD-R (TTG02)
Selected speed: Maximum
PI errors
Maximum: 23
Average: 5.41
Total: 644
PI failures

Scanning Statistics
Elapsed time: 4:00
Number of samples: 120
Average scanning interval: 8.00 ECC
Glitches removed: 0

It got a Quality score of 98.

Is this abnormal?

Fakes

Luckily, it does not happen often, but it does happen often enough to be a major annoyance to media buyers everywhere. Most fake media comes from Hong Kong, as a general rule. Fake media tends to float around Europe and Asia more than it does the USA. Fake media is normally sold in flea markets, on eBay and online. Major brand name media sold in stores is probably never going to be fake.

TYG02 = This was faked by INFOSMART (Hong Kong) in 2004-2005. Some OPTODISC media was also reported to carry this code. Mitsui is also faking them in their USA and Europe plants. The fakes are rumored to be for "improved 8x media detection" but low quality media is low quality, regardless of the media ID.
TTG02, TTH01, TTH02 = These are apparently "legal" fakes made by Mitsui, with permission by TDK to use the code. However the media is quite poor, not true TDK media. Another 2005 fake.
That's my guess. Although if you get a high score like that, they shouldn't be fakes.

Well, the high TDK score surprised me, although they've worked pretty well for me. There were just a few ISO's that didn't work when burned onto TDK's, so I decided to buy some authentic Taiyo Yudens from SuperMediaStore like suggested by some members of this forum. I first decided to try an ISO that worked flawlessly with TDK, and it ran a lot worse on my PS2 oddly.

I decided to test both DVD-R's with Nero CD-DVD Speed, and as shown the TDK scored a really high 98 while the TY scored a low 82. I'm not really sure what's going on, but it's really making me regret my purchase of the Taiyo Yudens right now.

I'm surprised the TDK is better... maybe it's just that particular batch...

One of the ISO's I can't get to work is The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2. It wouldn't work on the TDK 4x, Sony 8x, or the Taiyo Yuden 8x (I've burned 4 ISO's with the Taiyo Yuden, and only one DVD-R boots, and it loads much slower and is ripe with other issues unlike the TDK copy). I then decided to rebuild it with Gnie's tool, even though the ISO isn't > 4.36GB. The new ISO is .02GB smaller than the original ISO, but it still wouldn't work after burning with DVD Decrypter and a Sony 8x DVD-R. Is it just a bad ISO then?

I don't have that game so I can't say for sure what's the problem with it... I know some games just won't boot using swap magic, I'm not sure if this is one of them though.

Sounds like its the iso. After that many attempt on that variety of media as well as altering burn speeds, it has 2 be the iso.

Thing is though, it's a well-spread file on eMule, and there are people that have had success with it.

I'm slightly more optimistic about these Taiyo Yudens though. I had my first successful backup with a Taiyo Yuden disc (with about 6 coasters so far) with Suikoden V burning it with Nero at 8x rather than DVD Decrypter at 4x. I'll just keep playing around with these Taiyo Yudens, although I would've preferred that they worked without a hitch since they weren't that cheap in terms of DVD-R prices.

I think you might have a bad batch of Taiyos. I always get mine at supermeidastore, and always order TYGO2s, but the always send me TYGO3s that work flawlessly. I thought 02 were discountinued? Are they from the value line?

You guys are lucky you can order things from http://www.supermediastore.com/ ... the cheapest source I can find here is over $1/disc, and that's in NZD, which would be about $2/disc! It's even more annoying that they don't ship out of US ><

That's what I got. According to the description it's part of the "Premium Line."

Have you checked if there are firmware updates for your DVD writer? Sometimes that can cause problems too

Yeah, I went to the website linked in one of the stickied guides, and for some reason when I try to flash the drive with the latest firmware, it fails. I do have the latest compatible firmware though. The one Taiyo Yuden disc that was actually working doesn't seem to be working anymore either. Sigh.

Hi dan, can I ask what discs you are using? I cant find alot of the brands mentioned here in NZ. I got some mitsubishi +R 1-8x from dic smiths, out of 10 Ive got 1 coaster and 1 really slow loader, the rest are perfect but they wont write any slower than 6x with dvddecrypter. I also found some verbatim +R 1-4x (the ones with the movie reel print on em) My backed up THAW and GTA SA seem a bit laggy with these.
Mitsi code= MMC-003-00
verbatim code= CMC MAG-M01-00

note> My brand new liteon I got from TM is not -R compatible even though the sealed box said it was, as did the seller

Have a look here and compare the codes: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240341

You can get Ritek and Verbatim from TradeMe, there's also some Taiyo Yudens, but as I was saying to svtstang, they are bloody expensive here. Part of the reason that I've moved to getting a HD Combo for my V12 is because I can't get good quality discs for a good price, so I use Ritek and Mitsubishi (the same ones that you have) to store my backups, but play them using my harddisk.

Just be careful when you get things on TM - there's a LOT of fakes on there :(

Hmm according to that my verbatims are shite, I should note for interest... The slow loading mitsi was made on a freinds very expensive PC at 2.4x (mine sits on 6x with these discs). And as for the Coaster, well it boots right up and sits on the first screen, it was the last of 5 consecutive burns I did, perhaps my crappy drive needed a rest lol. Think ill stick with those mitsi's for now. The HD combo sounds like the way to go, dont really want to spend to much with the ps3 on its way though. Do you know if there still going to develop ps2 titles when that hits? I hope so coz I aint gettin one till the price halves.
