I've had the drive for a while now, and have found that some DVDs don't work on the drive anymore (including those that were written by the drive itself).

I also found that for some reason, I can only write to Samsung DVD-Rs. I tried Princo, Maxwell and two other unbranded DVD-Rs and all failed. Would anybody know why this would happen?

I changed my IDE channel setting (switched off DMA) and it wrote one Maxwell DVD-R successfully. Tried it again and it failed.

If anybody can help, please respond (I have 90 Princo DVD-Rs and 45 Maxwell DVD-Rs which I can't use now).

Try upgrading the firmware - I'd recommend the 1.31 new firmware which will also enable you to use 4x discs. Did you put a 4x disc in the 104 without upgrading? - if so you will have a problem with the laser. Best not to change the IDE settings. Are you using the latest version of Nero (5.5.10.28).

You need to contact Pioneer if it's still under warranty (www.pioneerelectronics.com)

It will be INTERESTING to find out what they say, since the FIRMWARE has been altered.

I've had the same problem with my a04 (old Bulkpaq G2 media I got w/ burner are tempremental even in the drive that wrote them).
I've since backed up some of them on newer media , I know that doesn't help but I'm in the same boat.
On the matter of e-mailing them..it took them 6 weeks before I got a reply.
And not a satisfactory or helpful e-mail either.

You have voided your warranty by upgrading the firmware, unless it was a recognised upgrade with their authority. They have done that before

I sorted out the prob of not being able to play back old DVD-R that I've burnt w/ Pioneer a04.
I bought a Lite-On 165H DVD-Rom (£35) and this sorted it !! : )

the drive is dying, thats all i know. i cant even write cds anymore. i contacted the vendor (esbuy.com) and they say, send it with $65 and they will upgrade me to a Pioneer 105. I'm a little hesitant to get that, as the drive has only been with me for 6 and a half months, and am scared the same thing will happen to the 105.

104 is just out-moded is all...the a04/104 is known for being able to burn to most cheap media whereas newer burners are more fussy

thanks

bye
