UTorrent Possibly Opening a Gateway to Viruses?

I've been using UTorrent for a while now, and i've liked it quite a lot, however, after downloading quite a bit, I noticed that my UTorrent was still downloading even if there was nothing in the download window. I got kinda freaked out as to what it could be possibly downloading, and haven't touched a torrent since, for fear of it being a trojan downloader.

Could anyone shed any light on the situation?

What do you mean it was downloading but there was nothing in the download window, if theres nothing in the download window then its not dowloading ;)

Secondly, are you sure it wasnt seeding the file, meaning after you had completed the file, uploading it to others like you are supposed to do.

I don't understand the problem, "I noticed that my UTorrent was still downloading even if there was nothing in the download window."

Could you expand on that please?

Do you mean a few bits a second..just a trickle. If there are uploads going on it's just logging the handshaking between the tracker and your app..
Try stopping all the active torrents. Everything should fall to 0 up and down. If not maybe it's time for a good virus/spyware scan...
Be wary of having limewire running at startup too..It's just full of all sorts of malware. Only allow it to connect when you want it too, otherwise it's another open port.

Strangely a week or so I couldn't get the 64 bit version of Azureus to stop downloading even when told to, and then it didn't shut down cleanly. When restarted the error window came up and couldn't be closed without rebooting.. Could this be related?.
Maybe there are tracker trojans out there?..It doesn't come as a surprise if there are.

I had a problem a long time ago where the virus uses the p2p software(in my case morpheus)to download more viruses and to use you to share them with others. They use names like "halo pc game" or even "norton anti-virus 2006" and after you download em and click to launch the app it infects your pc.

Never download something with a small file size like 200kb if the app is 100mb you get it?Also legit app installers have an icon not the "white box" if you see something with the white box after downloading it throw that b!tch in the recycle bin and then delete it.

I don't think it's a virus though I think it's just seeding like they already said.

By the way if something asks for a connection from your firewall say hell no.But the p2p virus's can get past this because you already gave the p2p app firwall access.See that's their trick to act like they are morpheus so you won't detect it.

Ok. Umm. In the little overall speed monitor on the bottom right hand corner, it showed speeds ranging from .1kbs to 2.0kbs while there were no active torrents, the download speed also mirrored the upload speed.

So my question is, what could it possibly be downloading and uploading?

And are malicious code getting through?

You most likely have full time internet.

There could be tons of things on your pc that do minimal downloads. Programs checking for updates, programs like weather apps updating their data. Hell a clock app that checks against a remote server to update your pc's time.

If you have no active torrents, then it isn't that. Run a full virus scan if you are paranoid. Also make sure anytime you install anything you disable the 'check for updates automatically'.

Is this monitor in the torrent app?? That should only log the torrent packets not anything else, but maybe it's a bug. utorrent has had a bit of a rough ride on the forums of the private tracker sites...but I can't find out why, apart from people are saying it's exploitable.
Another thought.. Are you running Limewire configured to connect at startup? Not sensible.. Only let it connect when you are using it otherwise you are open to the world all the time.

Good advice above. Along with a full virus and malware scan also just use windows to do a search for "hide.exe".. If you find that you have a big problem and you'll probably need to reinstall windows to solve it.

the speed tracker is in the torrent app itself, and didn't used to show these weird speeds. So i guess that my Torrent is exploited?

I also tried azerus, and that still had the same problem.

My internet is def on all the time, but i unplug it.

It's strange because my Azureus doesn't show any activity when there are no torrents active.. I like to know if anything is going in and out of my pc...and have some idea of what it is so thet I can agree to it or stop it. I never saw this when I was running windows either.. Overheads..fine but what are the programs that are causing them??
