ok so i bought this dynex drive http://www.dealtree.net/cart/select_item.cfm?cont=69692 off ebay and it refuses to burn anything. not even cd's.. i have a sony vaio pcv-rx560, little old but reliable so far.. i had two drives, a pioneer dvd rom drive and a crappy sony crx175 cd-rw that wasnt burning either so i replaced it with this one. i set this new drive as master and the pioneer as slave. updated the firmware, uninstalled Nero, ran the clean tool, rebooted a couple of times until it cleared all of the entries off.. reinstalled the 7082 so-said reliable version and it still doesnt burn anything. i downloaded the liveupdate tool Nero actually runs the project and says burn was successful.. but theres nothing on the cd.. i checked on my friends laptop just to make sure but they were all empty. im not even trying with dvd burning because as soon as i put in a dvd it freezes up Nero all together. given that i only have 256 mb's of ram.. i thought it would be a little slow to burn but not completely disastrous like this...
please if anybody has any hints on anything i could be doing to fix this, i would greatly appreciate it.. or if maybe i should send it back to ebay and ask for a refund..

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Solution:
This error can be caused in conjunction with some (cheap) medias, try to burn them alternative with lower speed or switch to another brand of discs.
If you cant solve this error by using recommend medias, pls. try out these steps , if they fail, drive is defect, you should claim it immediate to your dealer.
Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
It is recommend that device should be connected to secondary IDE port as master. Dont use fast ATA 133/166/233 and 266, unit should connected with delivered UDMA-2 cable(40pin)
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
First deinstall all your burnersoftware(s), also clean registry*.
