Regular IDE is called PATA. Parallel ATA, but mostly just reffered to as ATA. SATA, is Serial ATA, and transfers data serially, instead of parallely.

SATA is a newer technology and is coming standard on new systems. It's faster than PATA, and uses a small thiner cable instead of the large ribbon cables.

Some pictures of the differences:

IDE has a transfer rate of up to 133 MB/sec, a good SATA will have a rate of 3Gb/sec..

Obviously you have to have a SATA HD for a SATA connection. An IDE HD only has an IDE connector, so NO you cannot use any HD as a SATA!
