I would like to convert a programme that I have recorded using my standalone dvd burner.
At the moment I am using "Imtoo dvd ripper". I find the layout very simple and easy to use. All I do is put the DVD+RW in the pc and it finds the programmes that I have recorded. I then click on the programme that I wish to convert and watch it do its stuff. Piece of cake.
HERE IS THE PROBLEM.......
When I use "Imtoo dvd ripper" it takes the same time to decode the programme as the programme itself. IE if the programme is 50mins long then it will take just under 50mins to change to a DivX.
Can anyone recommend any other programme which will convert what I have recorded to either a DivX or XviD quicker.
The actual app makes little difference. Still the same codecs. The codec settings make the biggest difference. For instance VHQ4 in XviD will make encoding much slower than VHQ1. That said, an app that converts to RGB24 will take longer than an encoder that keeps the process in YV12 colourspace.
Firstly, thank you for your response to my question. Unfortunately for me your reply means absolutely nothing to me. I am a real layman when it comes to encoding.
Is there anything you can recommend? Or any other idea you may have to convert what I have recorded to a smaller format (either DivX or XviD or any other smaller file) I don't mind paying for it.

This is why people all want 4GHz computers - to speed up their encoding/transcoding! It goes slow (if you like quality).
Like anything else, you can set it quicker and get crap. I always set everything for maximum quality! Let it run overnight, or whatever.
Quality is everything - time is irrelevant. You will be watching it long after you forget how long it took to make it, y'know?
But I understand your question. Is this normal? What can I do?
It's normal; always do 2-pass rip; buy fast PC with big memory.
