I have just started and I have been having fun ripping and burning DVDs onto CDRs in VCD format (In fact I am doing one now) and want to start ripping and burning (using the software I am familiarish with, SmartRipper, DVD2AVI and TMPGenc) to rip DVD to DVDR. Is is essentially the same?
Stupid Question 2:
Will DVDRW discs work in standalone players once ripped and burned (ie do they have same problem as CDRW, or am I talking BS again?)?
Last Stupid Question (So stupid it is in the wrong forum):
Can I have subtitles ripped and then burned onto a CDR (VCD format) from DVD to work on any player (I am tired on translating films for my Czech friends and vice versa)

The process for DVD->DVD-R/+RW is essentially pretty different compared to VCD backups, read through this forum and you'll find some good instructions on how to do this.
DVD-Rs and DVD+RWs should work on any modern DVD player, but for compatibility, check vcdhelp.com's dvd player list.
Yes, you can have permanently burned subtitles that are attached to the video.

Thank you. I am following the (Excellent) guide that was on the articles section of this website (using SmartRipper, TMPGenc and DVD2AVI). Please give me a basic idea of what and at which point I would permanently attach the subtitles, working around the guide. Please bear in mind I am a novice!
Thanks.

Aha, that is now perfectly clear (and perhaps you can infer my (insert rude word here) British accent from my typing. Anyway I will give it a go. It appears I am not the only one who is capable of asking stupid questions. (Old Chap!)

;-) Ok, just inform me if you get it working. And if the frameserving from Dub to TMPGEnc causes issues, read the FAQ for that issue from our DVD Ripping forum.

Just two quickies, please
1 : What is ASPI and why does a box saying I don't have any pop up with Smart Ripper, but I have no problems ripping or burning?
2 : Can you point me to something that tells me how to have 'chapters' or 'tracks' on VCD that follow those on DVD. (I know, sorry, wrong forum!)
Thanks for your help :-)

ASPI is an alternative method for an operating system to access your DVD/CD-ROM/R drive in order to read/write to it. It is absolutely necessary in cases where you have SCSI interface drive and you use NT/2k/XP.
Probably VCDImager is the solution you should look at.

But I have XP and I imagine the Pioneer DVD R/RW (104) is SCSI, yet I am having no problem ripping yet! Although the box 'No ASPI' comes up every time I load a DVD in with Smart Ripper, I just click ok and it scans and unlocks the drive in any event. Is my computer a freak of nature (Or possibly me?)?

Well, you definately know if your drive is SCSI as the connector is much different than the ones that you have for regular IDE devices (like harddrives) which makes me assume that your drive is regular IDE. ASPI _might_ speed up ripping, but in some cases it might also f**k up your setup, so leave it as it is and be happy :-)

I loaded a couple of things like ForceASPI but could not get it to install properly. The system does seem to still be working. All the advice suggested installing it. By the way, I have a Sony Vaio RX203, maybe you know if it is SCSI. The manual (such as it is) makes no reference to SCSI and I could find no reference in the Online guide.
Thanks, P.

SCSI normally requires an additional card to your computer and the drive is connected directly to it, instead of IDE plugs where HDDs are connected to. Pretty easy to check, simply compare the cables of your HDDs and your other drives, those that are much wider are SCSI.
People very rarely get SCSI devices to their PCs nowadays, because they tend to cost a lot more -- servers, etc normally have SCSI drives.

So in conclusion SCSI is a bit of a red herring for me because (I checked) I have IDE cables not SCSI, so it does not matter, I do not need the ASPI stuff. Does this mean DVDDecrypter will not work, because it asks me to download ASPI when I boot it up and as I have been unsuccessful installing any I have not tried working it? Why does it only support 4.36 GB anyway and is there software which is as simple to us (according to the guides DVDDecrypter is) but supports more?
Thanks, P.

Of I was wrong, the system does not work properly. Maybe the ASPI stuff messed it up, becuase I can still rip and play DVDs, but as soon as I put a blank CDR in the machine just whirrs and will not stop. I have tried many discs and they are not faulty (nor have they been up until now). Can I get rid of the ASPI stuff I may have installed improperly, or am I stuffed? When I tried to write with the disc in this morning (when it was whirring) I pressed the Nero burn button and the message 'The instruction @ 0x2000348a referenced memory @ 0x01053794 the memory could not be written.'
What have I done??!!

ForceASPI should be able to remove the ASPI layer as well, try it.

I am not sure I ever got it working properly and couldn't find which version to use, none were labelled XP (which is what I have) . I looked on your downloads for a suitable version but could not find it. You may have guessed already, but I am a little inexperienced! Anyway I deleted everything marked Force or Frcaspi and the computer is writing to discs again. No idea if that is because of it, or not. Discs still whirr in the drive, though not loudly and I don't think that happened before.
