I've tried using this encoder a few times but always run into the same problem when trying to get the aspect ratio correct. Whenever I try converting an AVI to mpeg in 16.9, the picture is either too high or squashed, no matter what I choose in the Advanced section. Can anyone offer me advice on how to achieve the correct results?

In TMPGEnc you don't have any chance. You must, on Settings/Advanced, have the following setting:
Video Arrange Method ___ Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) .

Alas, the default is 'Full Screen ', not Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) .

If TMPGenc goes on showing the same error, it's a TMPGenc's bug and you must do this trick (I'm supposing you have a X x Y AVI file and you need to create a NTSC/PAL DVD):

Open that AVI with VirtualDub. Have its frameserving client installed (doublec kick on auxsetup and press 'Install handler').
Do Video___Filters__Add ---> Resize , and insert these settings:

New width: 720
New height: X/720 * Y (note: this is to keep aspect ratio)
Filter mode: Lanczos3 (VirtualDub's filter I prefere)

Check the box Expand frame and litterbox image and set:
Frame width: 720
Frame height: 480 (576 if PAL).

Then give OK to the filter, do File___Start frameserver, save 'movie.vdr' and load 'movie.vdr' instead of movie.avi, in TMPGenc.
