What would be the absolute best external dvd burner? Also, what would be the best dvd burner for someone looking to spend around $100-$150? Thank You!!!

I would recommend the benq DW1650 or DW1655 ext drives. Best bang for the buck. http://www.meritline.com/benq-dvd-bruner.html

Thanks, I was also considering the Lite-ON SHM-165P6SX.

http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&...

Basically I'm just looking into it now, i won't know for another week or so if I actually need to buy a new burner. What happened was that I have two internal dvd burners (1 Lite-On, 1 NEC) that i bought external adapters for and made them external so I can use them with my laptop. The burns I'm getting out of them are horrible now though. The discs either always skip at the end, or just become unreadable half way through the disc and will just freeze. I don't know if it is my burner situation that is doing this (which is why I am looking into buying a burner that is built to be external) or if it is my media. I am using RITEK G05 blank dvds. It could be that I just happen to have gotten a bad batch of them. I ordered some Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden discs and I am going to give them a try first before I spend more moeny on another burner. But thanks for your help. If anyone else has any suggestions, they would be appreciated.

Thank You!!!

I think your issue might not be the burners but your process. The target size when you compress your movie shouldn't exceed 4300. You will also want to burn at no more than 4X. Also give the Verbs and TY's a shot when you get them, you might see a difference.

My size does exceed 4300. Each image is about 4.35 GB. Do you think that is thet problem?

Yes... That is most likely the culprit (target size). ALL of my burners are external (see profile for brands). I never exceed 4.32GB (because that is DVDRebuilder's default target size), but I usually set the target size as 4380MB (approximately 4.28GB) in Recode2 and CloneDVD2. Also, I use only three manufacturers: Taiyo Yuden (95%), Verbatim (3%), and Maxell MIJ (2%)...

I would try some different media and try burning your G05's at 4x first. The target size needs to be somewhere around 4300-4400 mb although this doesn't sound like all of the problem in your case since too large of target size will cause playback issues only at the end of your backup instead of in the middle.

The better the media the closer you can set the target size to 4483 mb. I use a target size of around 4430-4450 mb with my verbatims without any problems.

Make sure your f/w for both drives is current. You sure could have gotton a bad batch. Some folk swear by ritek. I consider ritek and ricohjpn the best budget medias.

Oops! You are right, Mort. I guess I overlooked the part about them freezing in the middle as well! Looks like he needs to address ALL of the "burning basics." Let me throw in the avoidance of multitasking as well until you weed out the problem...

Yeah, I've been avoiding multitasking. As soon as I hit the burn button I walk away from my computer until it's done. I'm going to try burning them at 4x tonight when I get home from work and I'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Again!!!

@Mort...... I was looking into new burners, too, and I noticed that you have a Lite-on and a Benq...... which do you like better and why? and I noticed some Benq OEM externals..... what's the diff between OEM models and non OEM..... seems the OEM models are more expensive (like about $5-10 diff). Would I have a problem updating f/w with OEM models? I noticed that OEM models have to have firmware updates from the manufacturer of the computer where you got your INTERNAL drive. but what about external drives ..... I'm getting confused about OEM... can you clearify this for me?

@IHoe

I have a Plextor 716UF, a Lite-on 1633SX, and a NEC 1300a, all of which are externals and have performed great. The only problem I have had is with an I/O Magic external that had a rebadged BTC drive it would crash the computer everytime I tried to disconnect it, even sent it back to mfr. and they gave me another with the same problem. Turns out the chipset in the enclosure was a cheap ALI one and was giving other headaches with the drive. You can't go wrong with the name brands of BenQ, Lite-on for externals. Yes the non-OEM models will run you a little more, but IMHO it is worth the extra mainly for the support. Just my two cents, I am sure my buddy Marty will have more incite :)

thank you Arniebear for your responce...... but why are the OEM Benq's more money than the regular Non-OEMs?
http://www.meritline.com/benq-dvd-bruner.html
seems like all the external 1650s and 1655s are OEM models. why is that?

IHoe,

Usually the retail versions cost more than the oem versions. The only differences between a retail vs and oem vs when buying the same make of both is the retail comes in a branded box and usually has mounting hardware, a manual, and sometimes an ide cable (if internal). The oem will probably just come wrapped in bubble wrap in a plain brown box with no hardware, manuals, or name on the front of the drive. Oem is really different than rebadged like a sony dru-720a is a rebadged light-on sohw-1673s. Both my drives are OEM. I already had round IDE cables, hardware, software, and I downloaded Qsuite and smartburn. I could care less about having the name on the front of the drive. I know what they are.

If you're considering an external benq, buy it already in the enclosure. For some reason I have read they will not work in aftermarket external enclosures. Both my litey and benq burn about equilly well but the benq will rip a pressed dvd9 about 3-4 minutes faster than my litey so I would recommend the benq.

IHoe, if you already have a "scanning" drive, then look into the LG externals. They are fast, give great burns, and super quiet. See my profile for quality scores among my different externals...

Okay, even burning at 4x didn't work for me. After reading the preceding posts, I have decided to buy an external BenQ dvd burner even if it isn't my existing drives that are the problem. Now my problem is that I can't find any external BenQ manufactured drives to buy online. I went onto the BenQ website and their only external drive wasn't avaiable to buy anywhere. Anyone know a site? Thanks.

What I meant by that was don't buy an internal benq dvdrw and a seperate external enclosure and install it yourself. The ones that say external come preinstalled in an enclosure and will work fine. Just plug it into a power sorce and usb or firewire port. You need to decide if you want usb, firewire, or both. Some are also package deals with media included.

Both the 1650 and 1655 are excellent drives. They are primarily the same drive except the 1655 is lightscribe capable.

You're welcome. Let us know how you make out and if the new drive solves your problem. I don't want to deflate you but I'm not convinced a new drive will solve your issues. I would try some verbatim's or taiyo yuden's 1st. Either way you will have a good drive if you go ahead and get one.

If you had only 1 dvdrw drive now and you were having problems I would say maybe it was the drive but since you have the same problem with both drives, I'm just not convinced.

Yeah, I think I am definitly going to try the verbatims and taiyo's first. Why waste money if I don't have to right? Just a quick question in case I do end up buying a BenQ...What's the difference between these two? Why the price difference?

Okay, so here's the big question...Do I go for the DW1655 in an external case, or a made to be external drive from BenQ. Here's the links

Edit: Here's the direct link with specifications...

Basically, which one will perform better and which one is less likely to give me problems?

Thank You!!!
