I see you need a usb interface drive. If you don't care about lightscribe go with an external DW1650. If you would just as well have lightscribe go with an external DW1655. They are both excellent drives. Meritline has the best prices on external benq drives.

DW1650 http://www.meritline.com/combo-benq-dw-1650-16x-dvd-burner-with-5...

DW1655 http://www.meritline.com/usb2-external-benq-dw1655-16x-burner.html

From what I can tell, you will have to install the 1650 in the enclosure that comes with it but the 1655 is preinstalled and ready to use. Read the details for youself before taking my word for it.

So just to make sure I understand this correctly, and I'm sorry if I'm being a pain. You're saying an internal drive turned into and external drive will be better than a drive that was built to be external. Price isn't the issue at this moment (unless it goes above $200), I need quality.

If you must have quality try the SONY DRX-820UL, I have the 810 model and it is great. It's manufactured by BENQ and is a 8.5 DVD+/-R Dual Layer/Double Layer Burner. It's one of the highest rated DVD burners on the market. The new 820 also records to RAM DVD. My burner is only 5 months old and so far has been use frequently. I've back-up DVD's like Dave Chapelle's 2nd season (3disc series) to just one 8.5 DL DVD and done so effortlessly without flaw. This burner defaults to 16x but by simply placing your blank media of choice (Though I recommend Verbatim or SONY) into the DVD drive before starting the burn process in Nero 6 (supplied)in recode mode and this drive will allow you to choose a lower or alternate burn speed. It sells for 139.00 retail. I purchased mine for $118.00 on sale. Some here may look down on you purchasing a SONY? but none can deny the quality you get in this burner. It's money well spent.

All external drives that I know of are just internal drives in an external enclosure. The only external drive I have is a 80 gb hdd. Almost all internal drives can be made external by buying an external enclosure and installing the drive in the enclosure although I think I read that some benq's require a special external enclosure. If you can buy an internal drive already in an external enclosure or as a package deal for less money than buying them seperate then that is the way to go.

I don't think you can buy an internal drive and external enclosure for less money than the external benq's I gave you links to.

The only problem with the sony 810 or 820 is that I don't believe they will work with Qsuit or the benq booktype management utility even though they do have phillips/benq chipsets due to the sony firmware. In order to set booktype to dvd-rom with the 810 or 820 you will need to use the bitsetting utility in dvdinfopro. They also will not give you an accurate reading when using Nero disc quality scans.

It's entirely your choice but I would go with an external benq DW1655.
