I'm looking to buy another hard drive soon and i was wondering what was the best brand to go for?
I've got a Samsung 160gB one at the moment which has served me fine but after doing some googling people have been saying that Samsung isn't really that good if you want to be reading, writing, overwriting etc on to the hard drive...
So i'm asking whats the best brand of hard drive around...looking for no more than about 250gBs really (unless its a good deal/price) as that should keep me going forever (in theory ;)
P.S. Oh yeah just remembered...preferable a internal SATA one...as i think i dont have any more IDE devices left on the motherboard

well, Seagate is really good if you want that 5 year warranty :-) is this going to be a primary drive (with windows on it) or a storage drive? if it's a storage drive and you're booting off a PATA (or IDE) hard drive, you'll probably have to reinstall windows to access the SATA drive. if you're already on SATA and this is a storage drive you're adding, you're good.

Hmmm well it was probably gonna be for storage...
The samsung is IDE i'm afraid but i think i remember something about it being also SATA?? Possible? Anyways will look that up...
I've got it partitioned one with 50gB for windows and main apps and a 100gB one for games and storage...also just thought...its a 160gB hardrive but the partitions together only make 150gb!! whats up with that?!
P.S. Are you sure about having to have windows on it :( I'd have no way of coping all the files off it if i needed to format :(
Could i but the new SATA drive in another computer...install windows then put it in as the primary and then copy all the files off the old IDE and format it so it doesn't get confused about windows being installed twice?

don't need to redo windows if sata as slave as just need to load sata driver from motherboard disk. can't load windows on sata on other computer than expect it to work on present computer, to many hardware changes that windows will barf & not work.

Well if i was you i would use a maxtor HDD as they are fast and compatable with most computers! Maxtor all the way lol

I heard Western Digital was also good? What you guys think of Western Digital brand?

I think there are better brands than western digital, I had my 120 Gig WD hard drive break on me a week ago. I took it apart and found one of the "needles" that reads the information of the hard disk had broke. I kept hearing funny noises coming from the hard drive before it broke. I will most likely not buy another WD hard drive even though they are the cheapest. You get what you pay for sometimes.
I have never had a Maxtor HD but over half of the Dell's in a computer lab near me had to have their Maxtor hard drives replaced. This is the reason I do not intend on buying Maxtor.
I have the slightest idea what is good or the best, I only know the stuff that breaks.

there are horror stories with all the brands. the best you can do is try to find a hard drive that meets your needs (size, speed, compatibility) and get one with a good warranty, then keep everything well backed-up. you can't beat the Seagate 5 year warranty, and that's why i recoommend them.

I am not certain, but I think that Seagate bought out or combined with Maxtor. I have used both, as well as Western Digital, throughout the years and have not had a problem with any of them. I like Seagate the best, but that is merely personal preference.

i'm willing to be the answer may be something along the lines "of all the hard drives i've used, i've had the best performance, longevity, reliability, and/or value with Seagate versus the others." lol, am i close, bruce? sorry...seems kinda like a self-answering question. a personal preference is...a personal preference. :-)

Ok thanks guys...will look into the brands you mentioned...
Seagate seems to be the most popular...episcally the 5 year warrently :) Do i need to buy it direct from Seagate to get the warrenty?
I had a hard drive die on me from the thing about the pins...you can tell because of that noise...went straight out and bought this one and got everything off it :) Key to computing: know what the noises mean lol

you don't have to buy direct from Seagat to get the warranty (i'm not even sure how'd you go about getting stuff directly from them). it's a manufacturers warranty, so any retailer will offer it. i recommend newegg.

I still don't get back here much. Too much real paying work, lately, which is good, but I have been working 7 days a week for the past 4 weeks. :) But, I work out of my home, so I can take a nap, if necessary. lol
@pollution: See Auslander's response.
@Auslander: That, and the fact that Seagates are the quietest drives that I have used. I just wish that Conner had stayed in business on their own. :(
