Just wondering how safe it is downloading from such programs as Azureus and Shareaza? In terms of both downloading viruses and also being tracked via the IP address etc!

well if youre considering downloading from torrents they are pretty safe when it comes to viruses and for the ocasional viruas there is, check the comment part of that torrent before you download, just to be sure, most decent torrent sites these days have a commnets option.
As for the ip thing i guess it depends on where you live and the laws in your country. i live in Canada, and no problems here. Just if you are scared of your ip being tracked or whatever get peergaurdian and it will block most bad ips.
as for Shareaza, ive nere used it, but i would stick wiht azerus and torrents because if Shareaza is anything like limewire i would not recomned it.

Well first let's get something out of the way.Azureus is a torrent software shareaza is a p2p software that happens to be able to download torrents.

I make this distinction because as far as viruses torrent software is much more safe than regular old p2p clients like limewire and shareaza.Shareaza has all kinds of files that seem legit but there really viruses.

A proxy, peerguardian, and private trackers can help keep you safer as far as your ip address but I don't think the police will be a your door any time soon after all there are millions of people doing this.

And i'll add that Shareaza is a piece of sh*t when it comes to torrents, so unless you plan to use it for it's P2P, stick with Azureus.

Brilliant, thanks for everyone replying. I was just concerned about people I've read being thrown off by there ISP, and I'm not really interested in having that happen to me. But yeah as you would guess the Azureus program is my preference as well. I tend to use frostwire for Gnutella. I think I'll get onto the PeerGuardian though. Cheers
