I was wondering if this would be a bad burner for my DVD-R, and if i need a new one instead.

I have one and it work just fine. I have burned lots of games and no prob. At the end is ur desision, ur money, but i recoment u use it for a wile and if ur having no prob, keep it.

Hehe no. HP maybe ok but Pioneer drives are excellent they have some cool burn-accuracy features, I got a DVR-111 16x 3 months ago for $120 AUD. Haven't yet had a problem. Liteon, $ony and benq are pretty good too. Then again it does come down to what ur willing 2 pay.

I've had all sorts of problems with the 740b. Memorex DVD-R will not burn using Sonic, Nero, or xp built-in burner. I've had limited success with Memorex DVD-RW, but only burning at the slowest speed. Any suggestions for a good media brand appreciated.

Anything not memorex. There's a thread on the top of the page that helps answer this typical media question.. Guys, you sign up and make an account, authorize it, but fail to read the topics of the forum before posting these questions... Why?

I had a Sony DRU-700A and it was great for about 2 years, then just stopped working. I think i killed it :)
Now i have a BenQ DW1655 and is is excellent. PLus the added feature that it can booktype media and has lightscribe technology.
All depends on the features you want. I got my BenQ for like $45 at Newegg.com

No dont buy it im actualy on here trying to get help for my HP DVD RW 740b(i) because it does not want to burn dvds anymore
