I have burned about 20 cds successfully and now I am get a "burn failed" after burned failed after only 7% of completion. As I have stated earlier, all burns was successful and all burned at 48x speed on my NEC 3550A Dual Layer dvd burner drive.

I have installed a second NEC3550A drive and the second is right under the first drive. Could the heat generated on both drives being stacked on top of each other cause a problem? I know it isn't my disk media even though they are Imation media disks. I have know idea what the problem can be. Could it be that I am burning too much in a short period of time or that my drive lens needs cleansing?

Hi there.

I wouldn't worry about the two drives being on top of each other causing heat problems. As you know, it's a pretty standard configuration in towers and as long as it is properly ventilated as it should, there shouldn't be a problem..

I'm sorry to bring this to you, but it is common for Imation media to cause problems. You could also try to burn a bit slower than 48x to see if you get better results. (especially with lower quality media like Imation).

If you want to, you could post a section of your Nero log and we can take a look at it.

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

Nah it isn't the Imation media because I am using my second NEC 3550A drive and I just burned 4 additional copies no problem at 48x speed. So I am not worried about that. I noticed that my buffer underrun proection bars on Nero 6 rom isn't showing.

Can you tell me how to log my Nero Log on here so I can get some feedback. I know that my drive can still read media and data but just can't write on disks. I am very much considering RMA'ing my drive tomorrow and just receiving a new one in about a week or so.

You can find you Nero log here:

Nero 6: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
or
Nero 7: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt

Just post the last entry. Entries are seperated with these ================.

Remember to edit out your name and serial at top.

So when you say post do you mean I have to type everything by hand? I just thought maybe I could copy and paste some how and load it onto AF page. I already have the log but I have to admit I discern any of the information that I am reading. And I thought I was a computer geek.

Also could it be a firmware issue. I have NEC 3550A 105 but I know that there is a firmware flash for 1.06 so could that be the issue. I am getting a bit frustrated with NEC right now. This is the third drive I have had a problem with. The first one I ordered was dead on arrival. THe second one worked but now it isnt writing and the third issue I had wasn't necessarily a NEC issue but a UPS issue.

Thinking of just purchasing a Sony CD-RW drive to burn cd's, RMA my NEC drive and then order either two ASUS or two BENQ Dual Layer dvd-+r drives. Any other freeware burning roms out there that you guys would suggest other than Nero 6 rom. COuld it be Nero 6 rom?

You can just go ahead and copy/paste the last entry of the log, which can be found here...

Nero 6: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
or here
Nero 7: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt

Entries are seperated with these =======Nero history======
Just edit out your name and serial number at top.

To answer your question, your firmware being out of date could be an issue. A look at your log will reveal whether that is the case.

I don't know how to post other than typing it and I am not about to type all that. Too complicated plus to switch from my browser window and my Nero log file window is out of the question.

Reviewing my log I have noticed that my drive in question the DMA isn't enabled. Can this be the problem?

So is it the DMA not being enabled? I don't know what DMA is but I assume this is important. Would this explain why my drive can read but can't write?

DMA definitely needs to be ON. This is most likely your problem. However, there could be other factors that would still cause problems after you enable DMA. These will be contained in the Nero history.

There is no need to type the contents of your log in here. It is already in a text file, so all you need to do is select the text in the last entry, copy and paste it in this thread.

Edit: here is a guide to enabling DMA on that drive...

Once you locate your Nero log, highlight it....hold ctrl/c...go to message box and then ctrl/v and your log should appear in the message box, then just click REPLY.

Well here is the Nero log right here. I am suppose to be the computer geek and I had to have my 22 year old girl friend show me how to copy and paste. Damn! Please help guys. I think I deleted the serial numbers but not sure.

Thank you for your assistant. I don't think it is the media because I am still burning disk on my secondary E drive NEC 3550A 1.05 drive and it is burned at 48x speed. How do I flash my drive with firmware update?

How will will updating my Nero Rom help? My Nero seems fine even though I have never burned on dvd r disk yet. What benefits will I get by updating to Nero Rom you are suggesting?

I followed all your advice except updating firmware. Not completely comfortable because I don't know what I am doing. I sometimes have to have someone explain step by step in dumb downed language for me to understand and follow.

So I have upgraded Nero Rom, followed the link advice for turning on DMA on both drives so now both have DMA enanbled. I did download firmware 1.06 but like I mentioned earlier I am not familiar so if someone can assist me that would be great.

Try another burn before you update firmware, if it works, fine. Good quality discs such as Verbatim and Sony are consistent in their manufacture. It is NOT unusual to get a couple of faulty discs when using poorer quality discs, so what worked today may not work tomorrow.
