hey guys, umm I really need some help with this one.... you see, every single time I turn my computer on, boot into windows, do some stuff for a while, it randomly turns off. Completely turns off, not shutdown, like I'm talking POWER off. Having not enough power is not an issue, I have a 500W PSU for my pc, and plenty of ventilation.. but I'm wondering.. is using a 20pin connector on a 24 pin motherboard (book says its compatible) detrimental to my pc's health and thus causing random turn-offs? Any other ideas?
Thanks

I agree......sounds like heat. The maker of your mobo should have a hardware monitor available. D/L it and report back your heat readings at idle, medium load, and full load.

If you can not find or have trouble finding the monitor from your motherboard maker use EVEREST Free Edition 2.20.

ya man it must be heat i had the same problem with my pc this morning. My idling temperatures were 60C-64C and my max load temperatures were 75C-80C. so i tried to rearrange some wires for better ventilation and i accidentally placed the heatsink incorrectly and after that my pc would make a few beeps and shut off. when i tried to turn it on again my bios said that my pc shut off due to excessive cpu heat. if anyone can recomend a solution to my heat problems that would be great.(btw my pc is working again but the heat is still really high)

specs:
P4 550 HT: 3.4GHz
512 MB DDR2 533MHz
Intel motherboard D915PBL
ATI radeon X600 Pro 256 MB
160 GB Hard drive

Buy a aftermarket heatsink, they cool so much better.
When buying a heat sink you want one with good air flow(cfm-cubic feet per minute), low thermal resistance(thermal resistance is the ability of a material to resist the flow of heat, i.e. you want the heat to flow easily), and you want something with a low noise level. Noise levels are measured in dB(decibel) or Sone. You do not want to spend a lot of money either.DUH

Here is a link to a nice heat sink if you have the room for it in your case and have a 775 socket.

You want good thermal paste to go with your heatsink. Artic silver 5 works great.

Artic Silver Cleaner is VERY good for cleaning up that old paste.
