I have a plextor dvd drive and am using Nero 6.6.14 and I cannot play a dvd with it. It is saying something about a decoder. Does this software come with it or is it something that I have to buy?
Thanks

Thanks so much for the help. I followed your instructions and then tried to insert a DVD to play.
It came back up with this error message...saying that I have to buy something else...See here..http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/936/neroerror4il.jpg
Could you tell me if that is true..do I have to buy something else?
Thanks again,
Irv

that message is just telling you that you have to buy Nero Showtime if that is the viewer you want to use to watch your movie. You should be able to watch your movie in WMP or similar proggy.

I had tried that, but got the error message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings". It's set at 1152x864, so why do I have to change it??
Thanks Irv

Don't know why you'd have to change it, but have you tried?

Yes I have. I reduced it to 1024x768 and 16 bit instead of 32bit and it's still the same. I'm using WMP 10 with all updates.
Thanks again,

its basically saying that it cant read your file as its missing a component to read that type of file. You either have to upgrade your showtime with a more current decoder or change yout application to one that will be able to play the file

Are you using the Nero package that came with your DVD burner? If so did you install the entire package? I ask because most DVD burners come with the OEM Nero package that has NeroVision, Showtime, and the MPEG2 Video plugin that enables those things to work. I think that's OEM package 3.
If you downloaded Nero and only installed the 1st set, you need the 2nd set that includes the DVD Video stuff as well.
Or you could try better DVD players such as PowerDVD 6, WinDVD, Sonic CinePlayer Surround, etc. There's usually not a problem having one of these on the same system as Nero Showtime but it's better to install the player you want as default (like PowerDVD) last so it will hijack the right file associations. You want PowerDVD to be associated with the .vob extention, not Nero Showtime. Then, when Windows Media Player plays DVD's it will use the superior Cyberlink codec.
Edit - Oftentimes the supplied software with burners will just have the Nero Package 1 with only cd/DVD burning, but no player codec. These packages will normally have a 2nd cd with PowerDVD. It'll be an OEM edition without some of the fancy audio stuff, but the DVD codec is great.

No I didn't use the one tha tcam ewith the DVD player. I already had bought and installed Nero 6.6. I didn't think that I had to uninstall the Nero 6 I bought and re-install it from the CD.
Thanks

No, if you downloaded and installed the latest version of Nero 6.6 you shouldn't uninstall it.
However, did you install both regular Nero package AND Package #2. Number 2 has NeroVision, NeroRecode, NeroShowtime, the MPEG2 DVD Video Plugin, etc. If not, go to Nero's website and download and install it. Then you should have DVD playback both in the NeroShowtime and Windows Media Player.
If you already installed Packages 1 and 2, then somehow your codecs got messed up. In that case I would try uninstalling Nero, using the Nero CleanTools for Nero 6, then reinstalling both downloads.
I remember there were also 2 other packages for Nero 6, the InCD package and the NeroMIX package. You probably don't need either of those unless you like drag to disc (buggy and interferes with stuff) or another media player.

I have tried everything suggested and it will not work. It keeps telling me that I have to buy something else.
