Hi. I've been having some difficulty in getting my burned DVDs to play in my regular DVD player. It will often take a very long time for the player to read a burned disc, be it + or -R, and most of the time it will give me a read error or tell me there is no disc. After two or three frustrating times waiting for it to read, eventually it will. Sometimes, however, when switching between titles (like when I choose a menu option) it will fail to work and go back to the DVD player's screen, and the process will start again. I never used to have this problem; when I first started burning, most discs would play fine. When I play the discs back on my computer, they usually work fine.

I am using a LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S to burn, I use DVD Shrink and decrypter to create the discs, and I'm trying to play them back on a JVC XV-N310B which was modified to be region free, and is only about a year and a half old.

This isn't dire, like I said, I can still usually get playback after a frustrating wait, but I'd like to solve the problem if possible. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Seems like you may be using poor quality media - try Verbatim or TY's. Also try current media on some different brand players. Some are just plain finicky.

I've used all sorts of brands - Verbatim, Philips, Fuji, both +R and -R, and I still run into this problem. Maybe it is just the player being finicky, I don't know.

Try using quality media with a slow (ie 4X or slower) burn speed. Booktype the +R discs.

are u sure nothing has happened to the player?
I had a player which had a slight mishap with its own remote. Well the tray was out when the remote fell off the top of the tv and hit the open tray.
Since then it would play stamped (store bought) dvds fine but any burned DVD (no matter the brand or + or -) it would have a hard time finiding. Like yours it might take 3 or 4 trys before it could locate the dvd inside and start to play it. Also, sometimes it would take ages to start playing a burned DVD. Generally it sounds like what my player would do after the tray was banged.
Maybe something hit the open tray or even a sharp jolt to the player has caused this.
Can you play store bought DVDs ok?

Weird, your problem sounds just like mine - I can play "real" factory made DVDs perfectly fine, but only have problems with burned ones. I can't remember a specific instance when my player got banged up, but has gone through two separate moves with me, so its quite possible something happened during one of them. It seems like such a bizarre problem; any idea why it might be affected in such a way, and whether there's anything that can be done about it?

Sounds like the laser has moved out of alignment. Could be repaired but unless it's a very expensive player, wouldn't be worth it. Better off getting a cheap one that plays all the formats.

it soes sound like what i have and that it (the laser pick up) has been knocked out of alignment.

Like Dolphine2 has said, it may not be worth a service. I got a new player rather than repairs as in Sydney you can pick up a cheapie player that plays everything for about 50 bucks. How much is it for a generic barand player in your neck of the woods?

Here in the US you can get them for $20-$30 dollars. Plus tax, of course.
